Fresno State senior Chad Uyehara will lead the Bulldogs into the United States Bowling Congress Intercollegiate Team Championships, April 18 to 21, at Northrock Lanes in Wichita, Kan.
Uyehara, a 2003 Hawai'i Baptist graduate, helped the Bulldogs win the USBC West Region section, March 23 to 25.
"It has been a quiet season for us," Uyehara said in an E-mail. "We've really flown under the radar this year. The past two years we've been ranked No. 1 going into nationals, but this year we are third and have been ranked low all year.
"We basically have only one goal the rest of the way, and it's to bring home a national championship."
Uyehara was named to the National Collegiate Bowling Coaches Association Academic All-America team for the fourth time.
POLO
Virginia senior Devon Dailey (Punahou) is playing in the U.S. Polo Association Men's National Intercollegiate Championship this week in Lexington, Ky.
Polo is a club sport at Virginia, which finished third in last year's nationals.
WOMEN'S GOLF
Stanford sophomore Mari Chun (Kamehameha '05) finished second with her career tournament low of 8-under 208 in the PING/ASU Invitational at the par-72, 6230-yard Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz. She shot 71-66-71 at the tournament that concluded Sunday.
SOFTBALL
Maine freshman pitcher Jessica Ghazali (University High '06 of Waimanalo) was named the Black Bears' Student-Athlete of the Week for the week ending March 25.
Ghazali improved to 6-2 after a complete game, allowing three hits and one strikeout in a 2-0 win over Saint Peter's College Sunday.
Tennessee freshman designated player Anita Manuma (Campbell '06) hit her second collegiate home run in a 2-0 win over Western Kentucky March 28 to help extend the Vols' win streak to 12 games.
Manuma hit her solo home run to center field in the fourth inning.
Eastern Kentucky freshman third baseman Shyenne Hussey (Kailua '06 of Waimanalo) leads the team with a .427 batting average, 41 hits, seven doubles, seven home runs, 27 RBIs and a .719 slugging percentage.
FOOTBALL
Colorado junior linebacker Jordon Dizon (Waimea '04) was one of 42 defensive players named to the watch list for the Lott Trophy, awarded to college football's Defensive IMPACT Player of the Year.
Tennessee football fans voted junior defensive tackle J.T. Mapu (Kahuku '02) as a starter for Saturday's Orange and White Game.
More than 1,500 voted online to select the starting lineups on the www.UTsports.com Web site.
Mapu, who returned last season after serving a church mission, played in all 13 games in 2006, with eight tackles (three solo).
Iowa Wesleyan senior linebacker James Kaopuiki (Moanalua '03) was named to the Mid-State Football Association All-Academic team. Kaopuiki earned a 3.28 GPA in psychology.
Kaopuiki will play in the National All-Stars Bowl College Football Classic Saturday, and the Victory Sports Network Senior Classic All-Star Game April 21.
Southern Oregon linebacker Faimafili Sitivi La'uli (Kahuku of La'ie) is also on the roster for the VSN All-Star Game, and Virginia Union offensive lineman Kaeo Lealao (Campbell) is on the National All-Stars Bowl Classic roster.
BASEBALL
UNLV freshman pitcher Michael Goodman (Radford '06) earned his first win in an 11-6 victory over then-No. 24 UC Irvine March 27.
Goodman pitched three innings in relief, allowing one earned run on two hits, with one walk.
Central Arizona JC freshman outfielder C.J. Johnson ('Iolani '06) was 7 for 12 with four doubles, five RBIs, five runs and three walks in games against South Mountain (March 27) and Eastern Arizona (March 31).
MEN'S BASKETBALL
Fairleigh Dickinson (Madison, N.J.) sophomore guard Brandon Matano (attended University High), who walked on to the University of Hawai'i football team and men's basketball team in the 2004-05 season, averaged 6.9 points and 1.9 rebounds, with 13 assists and 3 steals this season for the Division III school.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Cal State Northridge senior guard Megan Ching (Kamehameha '03) was named to the Big West Conference Winter All-Academic team. She is a biology major.
WOMEN'S SWIMMING
UC Irvine junior Chelsea Nagata (Maui '04) and Pacific sophomore April Woo ('Iolani '05) were named to the Big West Conference Winter All-Academic team.
Nagata is a psychology/social behaviors major and Woo is psychology major.
SAILING
Harvard freshman Drew Robb (Punahou '06) and teammate Hyunjin Kim won the B Division by 31 points after scoring 55 points at the Oberg Trophy this past weekend.
The duo won eight times in 18 races, including four in a row. They placed in the top four in six other races.
ROWING
Southern California sophomore Denise Kobashikawa (Maryknoll '05) led the JV Eight crew to a win in the Jackie Ann Stitt Hungness Trophy Women's Collegiate JV Grand Final Sunday.
Kobashikawa, the coxswain, helped the crew finish in 7:06.60. The Trojans' highest finish previously in JV events at the Crew Classic was third in 1999.
COACHING
Punahou alum Tiffany Taylor ('01) is coaching women's soccer at Framingham State University in Massachusetts.
