Warriors' Dante honored by MPSF

Hawai'i middle blocker Dio Dante yesterday was named the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation men's volleyball co-player of the week.
Dante, a Maui High alum, had 15 kills and hit .522 with two aces and 23 blocks (3.83 bpg) in two three-game victories at UC San Diego last week.
Dante shared the honor with UC Santa Barbara's Evan Patak, who slammed 48 kills in eight games and hit .427 in wins over Pacific and Stanford.
Meanwhile, Hawai'i remained No. 13 in the coaches poll released yesterday.
Pepperdine (21-1) remained No. 1 in the poll sponsored by College Sports Television and the American Volleyball Coaches Association. UH (9-13) plays at No. 9 Long Beach State (11-13) Friday and Saturday.

VULCANS HIRE COACH
The University of Hawai'i-Hilo hired Bruce Atkinson yesterday as the school's third women's volleyball coach in three years.
Atkinson replaces Carla Carpenter-Kabalis, who was interim coach last season. Julie Morgan coached the Vulcans for three seasons, resigning in July 2006. The Vulcans were 5-16 last season.
Atkinson, a 1993 Brigham Young-Hawai'i graduate, started the Texas-Brownsville program last season and guided it to a 28-11 record.

DUO WINS 4-BALL TITLE
Mark Morrison and Kyle Herzberg teamed for a 5-under-par 139 to win the Aloha Section PGA Big Island Candies Scotch 4-Ball Championship by four strokes yesterday at Kailua, Kona, Hawai'i.
Morrison, of Swing & Play the Easy Way, and Herzberg, of Makalei Golf Club, shot 68 in the final-round, alternate-shot format to go with a best-ball 71 at The Club at Hokuli'a.
Matt Pakkala, of Mililani Golf Club, and Kirk Nelson, of Makena Golf Club, finished second at 67-76—143.

KAISER BEATS KAHUKU
Dustin Dela Pena hit a grand slam and Toby Inouye fired a four-hitter as host Kaiser routed Kahuku, 11-1, yesterday in an O'ahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division baseball game.
