Boyfriend arrested in golf club attack

A 33-year-old man was charged yesterday with first-degree assault for allegedly striking his girlfriend on the head with a golf club iron, causing critical injuries, during a domestic dispute Sunday night in Kane'ohe.

Jason Kanamu is being held in lieu of $50,000 bail. According to Hawai'i Criminal Justice Data Center records, he has 15 prior convictions.

The woman, 34, was taken to Castle Medical Center in Kailua with critical head injuries and later transferred to The Queen's Medical Center, where she was under observation in stable condition, Detective Gary Lahens said. The woman suffered a skull fracture and brain hemorrhage, he said.

"She's very lucky to be alive," Lahens said. "The quick response of officers and emergency medical technicians made a big difference."


VISITING BOY FOUND IN HOTEL POOL DIES

A boy visiting from Japan who was found unconscious at the bottom of a hotel pool in Waikiki last Tuesday died yesterday at Kapi'olani Medical Center for Women & Children.

The Honolulu medical examiner's office identified the boy as Takuya Shinotsuka, 9, of Hiroshima.

According to police, the boy's father left him unattended at the Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort pool to smoke a cigarette.


MAN ARRESTED IN ASSAULT, FIRE

Police arrested a 53-year-old Waipahu man for questioning after someone burned a woman with a cigarette lighter and set her mattress on fire during an argument yesterday in Wahiawa.

The man allegedly extinguished the fire and left the scene at 1:55 a.m. He was arrested when he returned to the Kuahelani Avenue residence at 12:45 p.m.
