The biggest upset on election night happened on the football field.
McKinley's defense came up with three big plays in crucial situations to stun No. 2 Kahuku, 14-13, last night in O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red East football at Roosevelt stadium.
"It was a big win for our program and our kids," McKinley first-year coach Bobby Grey said. "The defense kept saving us. The defense played awesome."
It was the Tigers' first win against the Red Raiders since an 11-7 win in 1975. The teams played to a 13-13 tie in 1981. McKinley (3-2 overall, 2-1 Red East) pulled even with Kahuku (3-2, 2-1) for third in the East.
"This is amazing," McKinley receiver and safety Isaac Iuta said. "(Kahuku) was the best team on O'ahu."
Iuta, who had two sacks and a fumble recovery, was in on one of the three big defensive stops. With four seconds left, Kahuku quarterback Richard Torres completed a pass to Pelefoni Soliai from the McKinley 49. But Iuta and two other Tigers tackled Soliai at the 15 as time ran out.
"McKinley did an awesome job," Kahuku coach Reggie Torres said. "They came out ready to play. We knew they were getting better. They beat Castle last week."
The second big play came in the third quarter, when Kahuku pulled to within one after Torres hit Ian Fujinaga on a 6-yard TD pass. The Red Raiders elected to go for the two-point conversion, but the Tigers' defense stopped Torres on a keeper to the right just before the goal line to preserve the lead.
"We made that decision at the half," Torres said of going for the two-point try. "We just wanted to give the boys a little boost, just to get the lead and get the momentum on our side. (McKinley) had the momentum going the whole first half. Unfortunately, it didn't work. That's my fault."
The first big play happened late in the third quarter. The Red Raiders began rolling over the Tigers' defense, which had a number of two-way players. But on second-and-goal from the 3, Torres tried to sneak up the middle, but lost the ball at the 1. The Tigers took over and worked the ball and the clock to the Kahuku 46 before losing the ball on downs with 6:01 left in the game.
Two good defensive plays by linebacker Mike Leakona led to two plays that lost yardage. On third down, Leakona forced Torres from the pocket to set up a sack by Iuta. Kahuku had to punt with 3:19 left in the game.
McKinley eventually had to punt, giving Kahuku possession at its 20 with 1:19 left. The Red Raiders worked the ball to the McKinley 49 after stopping the clock with four seconds left when Torres spiked the ball. Torres then hit Soliai over the middle in stride, but the Tigers stopped him at the 15, ending the game.
After a scoreless first quarter, McKinley broke the deadlock on a 7-yard TD pass from Tilton Kaluna to Alan Hashimoto with 7:26 left in the half. Marcus Amorin's PAT made it 7-0.
The Tigers almost scored on their next series, when on fourth-and-21 at the Kahuku 34, Kaluna hit Ben Davis, who dropped the ball in the end zone. But Kahuku sputtered on its next series because of two tackles for losses by Leakona. A fumble on the next play was recovered by McKinley at the Kahuku 18, where tailback Keawe Kalama scored on a draw with 4:08 left to give McKinley a 14-0 lead.
Gary Nagy's 49-yard kickoff return to the McKinley 43 set up the Red Raiders' first score of the game, a 5-yard TD run by Fujinaga that capped a five-play drive. Kaika Sasaoka's PAT pulled Kahuku to 14-7 with 1:55 left in the half. An interception by Kahuku's Tiave Oto at the Red Raiders' goal line and ensuing 40-yard return stopped a potential McKinley scoring drive just before the half.
The Red Raiders were without two key offensive linemen in Benji Kemoeatu and John Manu-Olevao. Both had injuries. But Torres said it was no excuse.
"The guys we had in, they can do (the job)," Torres said. "It's just McKinley came out and played better."
