POLICE BEAT
Gunman in dress, wig robs bank

Advertiser Staff

A man wearing a wig and long dress robbed the Ke'eaumoku Street branch of Central Pacific Bank yesterday afternoon.

Police last night were investigating whether the man is the same person responsible for a rash of bank robberies on O'ahu this year.

In many of those cases, a man robbed the financial institutions while dressed in various costumes, including hospital scrubs, military fatigues and as a woman.

In yesterday's robbery, a man handed a teller a note demanding cash at about 4:15 p.m. and showed the butt of a handgun.

Police said the man also threatened to shoot the teller if she didn't hand over some money.

The teller complied and the man fled with an undisclosed amount in cash. Police later recovered the wig and dress.

The suspect was described as 5 feet 8, 200 pounds, with a fair complexion. Police said he was in his 30s or 40s.

MAN PULLED FROM OCEAN IS CRITICAL

An 83-year-old man was in critical condition yesterday after lifeguards pulled him from waters off Waikiki Beach.

The man was found unresponsive in the ocean shortly after 3:30 p.m.

Lifeguards performed CPR and were able to restore a pulse.

He was taken to Straub Clinic and Hospital where he was in critical condition yesterday afternoon, said Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city Department of Emergency Services.

It was not known if the man was a visitor or Hawai'i resident.
