A 65-year-old soccer coach suspected of sexually assaulting a 7-year-old player and infecting him with a venereal disease remained in police custody last night as police looked into allegations that at least five other children may have been molested by the man.
The suspect, a Wahiawa resident, is a longtime coach and organizer of youth soccer programs. He also taught part time at a Wahiawa public school and heads a nonprofit organization that tutors underprivileged children.
The man was arrested Thursday afternoon near Ka'ala Elementary School in Wahiawa before a youth soccer practice. He was booked on one count of third-degree sexual assault.
An investigation of the man began after a 7-year-old boy was diagnosed with a venereal disease during a routine physical exam. Police said the boy said he had been sexually assaulted by his soccer coach.
Last night, police continued to interview children and parents who have stepped forward since the accusation was made public. Police said up to five other children have said they were sexually assaulted by the man.
Police last night said the man is expected to be charged today in connection with the sexual assault of the 7-year-old boy. More charges are possible.
Third-degree sexual assault is a felony punishable by up to five years in prison.
