"Shout, Sister, Shout!" a concert tribute to Sister Rosetta Tharpe (1915-1973), one of the greatest gospel singers of her generation, brings to our shores:

  • Marie Knight, left, a gospel singer who performed with Tharpe and a famed solo artist in her own right;

  • The Holmes Brothers — Sherman and Wendell Holmes and Popsy Dixon — who have performed their gospel-tinged, funky music since1979; and

  • Odetta, the pioneering vocalist of folk, blues, spirituals, jazz and protest songs.

    Tau Dance Theatre developed "Naupaka: A Hawaiian Love Story," a contemporary opera, based on the classic story of forbidden love between an ali'i and a low-born. The performance includes chant, falsetto, orchestral and choral compositions tied in with modern dance. It will be rendered almost entirely in Hawaiian, with English subtitles.     FESTIVAL: OCT. 7-8

    The Hawaii Council on Portuguese Heritage presents Festa, a celebration of all that's Portuguese in Hawai'i. Look for favorite edibles such as malasadas, Portuguese bean soup, linguica, pao doce; craftwork imported from Portugal, local artists and vendors; cooking demonstrations, cultural displays and video presentations. Several geneology organizations will offer specialized research into a number of ethnicities.

    The innovative dance troupe Momix returns to the Islands with its new production, "Lunar Sea," a multimedia extravaganza that includes music by Hans Zimmer and angel-like puppets that seemingly float through the air. Momix was last here in April 2003.

    Cesar Millan, below left, star of the National Geographic Channel's "The Dog Whisperer" TV series, is returning for another seminar on training ... humans! His first appearance in Honolulu was in fall 2005. Scheduled topics include how to recognize the animal behavior in dogs, different levels of energy and how they influence a dog's personality, as well as Millan's leash techniques. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Hawaiian Humane Society. Remember: No pets allowed.

    Was it so long ago that Chris Isaak was the pop/rock darling of the critics and well, to be honest, a lot of listeners of the female persuasion? His albums "Heart Shaped World" (1989) and "Wicked Game" (1990), full of songs of love and yearning, and his retro good looks put him firmly on the musical map and even into some small movie roles. He last performed in the Islands in February 1999.
