Acknowledging a "miscommunication," head coach June Jones yesterday reinstated cornerback Ryan Keomaka to the University of Hawai'i football team.
On Tuesday, Jones dismissed Keomaka for supposedly missing mandatory study sessions. But Jones learned it was a miscommunication. Keomaka believed he could choose his study period instead of attending only the team's nightly study hall.
UH academic officials sent Jones a letter confirming Keomaka had been attending study sessions regularly. After meeting with Keomaka, Jones agreed to the reinstatement.
But Keomaka, who did not practice Tuesday and Wednesday, will not be included on the 60-player travel roster for Saturday's game at Boise State.
Keomaka, who was the No. 2 left cornerback last week, will resume practicing today. The Warriors depart this afternoon.
"I'm glad he's back," defensive coordinator Jerry Glanville said. "He's not a bad kid. If he were a bad guy, I wouldn't fight for him. I know he's not a bad guy."
ELIMIMIAN STILL HOPEFUL
Inside linebacker Solomon Elimimian, who is recovering from a partially torn medial collateral ligament in his right knee, did not compete in contact drills yesterday.
On Tuesday, Elimimian practiced for the first time since suffering the injury on Sept. 2.
"I wanted to get more rehab, so I thought I'd rest it," said Elimimian, who spent practice working on running drills.
Elimimian said he remains hopeful of playing against Boise State.
"He will not play until he's 100 percent; 99 won't get it," Glanville said. "He tells me he can't cut. If he can't cut, and he can't turn, he can't play."
Jones said Elimimian will make the trip, but a decision won't be made until Saturday. "I was a little concerned he wasn't out there, but we'll line up with what we've got," Jones said.
Brad Kalilimoku would start if Elimimian is not available.
LB SATELE HURTING
Outside linebacker Brashton Satele has been hindered because of a sprained acromioclavicular (A.C.) joint.
"It's going to be sore, but I can play with it," he insisted.
Karl Noa has practiced as the No. 2 left outside linebacker.
KELLY CORRECTS KICKS
Kicker Daniel Kelly said he looks forward to the Boise State game, but not the preceding video sessions.
"I said before the season, this is one of the two games I'm going to hate," Kelly said. "We're going to watch those two kicks that got blocked (in last year's game)."
Orlando Scandrick picked up the ball following the blocked field goal and ran 69 yards for a touchdown. With 3:03 remaining, Kelly's point-after kick, which would have tied the game, was blocked.
"I was notorious for kicking the ball low," Kelly said. "The first step in fixing that is admitting you sucked."
During the offseason he worked on his mechanics, reducing his back swing but striking the football with more power. Kelly has made all eight of his PATs and his only field-goal attempt this season.
NOTES AND UPDATES
"That's what I understand," said Mouse Davis, who coaches the running backs, of the Tuioti-Mariner move. "He's an athlete. He's got good balance."
Davis said there have been "discussions" about moving Satele. "He's got good speed, good athletic ability," Davis said, noting a move wouldn't happen at least until Satele fully recovers from a shoulder injury. More likely, the experiment would not happen until spring practice.
"Everybody says he's a great running back," Glanville said. "I've heard that. I doubt (any move) would happen this year."
