Kane'ohe crash injures man, girl

One man was critically injured yesterday when the car he was driving struck a parked vehicle on the eastbound H-3 Freeway near the Likelike Highway offramp, officials said.
The man, in his 20s, was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in critical condition following the crash about 10:40 a.m., said Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city Emergency Services Department.
A 15-year-old girl who was a passenger in the car was also taken to Queen's in serious condition, he said.
Police are investigating.

OLD MUNITION CLOSES BEACH
LIHU'E Kaua'i — The state plans to close Polihale Beach Park tomorrow through Wednesday while explosives experts deal with a piece of unexploded ordnance found in about 50 feet of water, 800 yards from the park beach.
U.S. Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile Unit Three personnel will disassemble or explode the device, which was not described. A one-mile safety zone will be established in waters of the area, along with a 1,200-foot zone on land. If the device is removed by Tuesday, the park will be reopened Wednesday.
"We are implementing the closure of the park and nearshore waters, in the interest of public safety, and thank the public for their cooperation during the operation," said Peter Young, chairman of the state Department of Land and Natural Resources.

MAN KILLED, 2 HURT IN ONE-CAR WRECK
One man was killed and two others injured in a one-car crash last night on Hawai'i Belt Road near Pepe'ekeo, Big Island firefighters said.
The accident happened about 7:30 p.m. when the vehicle hit an embankment and a telephone pole. The victim, whose name and age were not released last night, was thrown from the car.
The other two men were taken to Hilo Medical Center with minor injuries.
The Hawai'i County Fire Department said speed and alcohol were likely factors in the crash. Hawai'i Belt Road in the area of the accident was closed for hours last night so police could investigate.

MUSICIANS UNION ENDORSES AKAKA
U.S. Sen. Daniel Akaka has been endorsed by the Musicians' Association of Hawai'i and a group of 250 state lawyers.
The musicians' Local 677 praised Akaka for his advocacy for working people, while the lawyers said the senator embraced the concepts of justice and fairness.
Akaka had earlier been endorsed by the University of Hawai'i Professional Assembly.
The senator is going up against U.S. Rep. Ed Case in the Democratic primary for Senate.
