Public school enrollment off

Hawai'i's public school enrollment has declined by 2,121 students to a total of 179,234, according to the state Department of Education.
Enrollment declined in every DOE district, and only charter schools experienced an increase in students — a total of 82. Enrollment statewide has declined by more than 10,000 students since it peaked at 189,281 in 1997.
The state total includes 160,204 in regular education and 19,030 in special education. Special education counts also declined in every district and in the charter schools.
The Leeward district remains the largest district with 39,734 students, followed by Central with 32,222 and Honolulu with 31,604. Kaua'i remains the smallest with a total of 9,458 students.
