A community briefing focusing on the impact of development in the Ala Moana-to-Mo'ili'ili area and the city's latest recommendations for mass transit is set for 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Washington Middle School, 1633 S. King St.

City transportation officials and consultants will provide a general overview of Honolulu's recommended mass transit routes, including the previously proposed routes of South King Street, Kapi'olani Boulevard and Queen Street, and the additional alternatives of Halekauwila Street and Ala Moana Boulevard. After the presentations, elected officials will discuss major issues tied to the topics.

The event is sponsored by city Councilwoman Ann Kobayashi; state Sens. Carol Fukunaga and Brian Taniguchi; and state Reps. Kirk Caldwell, Scott Nishimoto and Scott Saiki.

GRAFFITI PAINTOUT SET FOR SATURDAY

More that 250 volunteers are expected to participate in a Waipahu Community Center graffiti paintout along Paiwa Street, from Waipahu Street to the H-1 east on-ramp, set for 8 a.m. to noon Saturday. Volunteers are aiming to complete the paintout before the afternoon visit of Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo to the Filipino Community Center.

Among the volunteers are representatives from Waipahu businesses, faith-based organizations and area residents. Board director Henry Aquino and Myrna Feliciano are organizing the event. Area lawmakers and businesses have donated paint, gloves, brushes and food, Feliciano said.

MAN ARRESTED IN PARKWAY KNIFING

A 41-year-old man was arrested Saturday night after he allegedly slashed a 26-year-old man in the arm with a 9-inch kitchen knife alongside Meheula Parkway in Mililani.

Police were told the two men were arguing about 9:30 p.m. when the older man pulled the knife from his bag and slashed the other man on his left arm.

Police said the injured man went into a nearby business and called police. The suspect left the area before police arrived, but they found him at his home and arrested him on suspicion of second-degree assault.

BICYCLIST SUFFERS CRITICAL INJURIES

A woman was critically injured when her bicycle collided with a car yesterday afternoon in Waialua.

The woman was riding a bicycle when it turned left into the path of a car shortly after 5 p.m., witnesses said. She was reportedly thrown from the bicycle. The woman, in her mid-30s, was flown by medevac helicopter to The Queen's Medical Center in critical condition, said Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city Department of Emergency Services.

Police closed Waialua Beach Road from Goodale Avenue to Oliana Street and Hale'iwa Beach Road from Pa'ala'a Road to Waialua Beach Road for about 3 1/2 hours while they investigated.

SLEEPER ARRESTED IN STOLEN TRUCK

Police arrested a 40-year-old man on Saturday in connection with an incident that occurred on Wednesday in Nanakuli, in which he was found sleeping in a stolen truck that still had its motor running.

Police said the truck belongs to a 42-year-old man whose girlfriend spotted it in Nanakuli and called police. Police said the owner went to the spot where the truck was found and initiated a stolen-vehicle case. The owner said the truck had been missing since Sept. 2.

The man found asleep in the truck was arrested on suspicion of unauthorized control of a propelled vehicle. Police reported finding drugs on the man during a "pat-down search," and he was also arrested on suspicion of second-degree promotion of dangerous drugs.

VISITOR, 73, DIES ON BICYCLE TRIP

HALEAKALA NATIONAL PARK — A 73-year-old park visitor from Louisiana died Wednesday during a downhill bicycle tour.

Robert Ogan of Gretna, La., was part of a tour group that began a ride at the 10,000-foot summit of the volcano, said Chief Ranger Mark Tanaka-Sanders. The group successfully navigated through dozens of turns in the wind and rain, but about 5 1/2 miles into the ride, on a straightaway protected from the weather, Ogan veered off the right side of the road, stopped abruptly and was launched over the handlebars, witnesses said. He landed about 8 feet to 10 feet down the roadway bank.

When rangers and a park medic reached the man, he was unresponsive and had no pulse, Tanaka-Sanders said. Efforts to revive Ogan failed.

Tanaka-Sanders said there were no obstructions in the road and it is not known why the bicyclist suddenly stopped. At the request of Ogan's family, no autopsy was done. It is not known if Ogan died of crash injuries or a medical condition.

FATAL FALL MAY BE TIED TO RAPE

KIHEI — Police are investigating whether a man's deadly fall from a sixth-floor balcony is connected to the beating and rape of a 40-year-old Maui woman early Sunday.

The woman suffered facial injuries and remained hospitalized yesterday at Maui Memorial Medical Center after reporting she was attacked just before 2 a.m. while sleeping in the bedroom of a house on Kahaone Place in Kihei. It reportedly was her first night living at the residence, said Lt. Glenn Cuomo of the Maui Police Department.

About three hours later, a 38-year-old man who also lived at the house jumped or fell from an Island Surf unit in Kihei after telling friends there that he feared he would be blamed for the sexual assault, Cuomo said. The man was identified as Stephen Mendoza, a construction worker.

ESCAPEE TURNS SELF IN TO POLICE

HILO — A Hamakua man who escaped from Hilo police Wednesday turned himself in to authorities on Sunday evening, police said.

Konrad Ross, 36, surrendered at the Hilo police station at about 8 p.m. Ross had been arrested on a warrant for violating the terms of his release on bail when he freed himself from hard-plastic restraints and ran away from the officers.

Ross was being held yesterday at the Hilo police cellblock. East Hawai'i Criminal Investigations Section detectives are continuing the investigation into the escape.

Police warned that anyone who knowingly conceals someone wanted by police can be charged with hindering prosecution, a felony punishable by up to five years in prison.
