A lingering brushfire in West Maui upslope of Ma'alaea was about 90 percent contained after four days of battling the blaze.
About 3,923 acres have been scorched by the fire since it began Friday, said county spokeswoman Ellen Pelissero.
Two fire department helicopters remained on standby yesterday, and land crews continued to monitor hot spots near the top of the northwest corner of the slope above Ma'alaea. Two military helicopters, which were assisting with the fire Sunday, have returned to O'ahu, she said.
"That seems to be it with this fire, thankfully," Pelissero said.
The wildfire had forced the closure of Honoapi'ilani Highway Friday, leaving people unable to reach hotels, the airport or jobs. The road was fully reopened Saturday, and traffic was not affected yesterday.
Officials had asked residents of a small number of homes on the makai side of Honoapi'ilani Highway west of the Ma'alaea Harbor to voluntarily evacuate on Friday, as well.
The fire was not an immediate threat to people or property, officials have said. However, heavy smoke near the harbor did cause limited visibility at times.
