Police are looking for two men who sparked a brief car chase in downtown Honolulu that ended with a collision and an injured police officer.
Shortly before 10 a.m. yesterday two patrol officers were responding to a report of two men in a car using drugs in the 200 block of Prospect Street, police said.
Two officers got out of their cars and approached the vehicle. Suddenly the driver reversed, almost striking one of the officers, said Honolulu police Capt. Frank Fujii.
The car then took off after ramming into one of the parked police cars, he said.
During the pursuit, an officer in a third car tried to get ahead of the suspect's car and had his siren going and blue lights flashing when he collided with a woman's car at the corner of School Street and Pali Highway.
The woman driving the car was not injured, police said.
"He was trying to position himself strategically to intercept the suspect's vehicle," Fujii said of the officer.
The officer was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in fair condition and was treated and released, police said.
"Someone attempted to murder a police officer," Fujii said. "Every day we have to balance the safety of the community with what it takes to put the criminal element behind bars."
Police are looking for a light blue Toyota with oxidized paint being driven by a man with tattoos on both forearms and a black baseball cap.
Anyone with information about the suspect or the car is asked to call police at 529-3115.
