'AIEA — Melia Iwamoto and Violet Alama had 12 kills apiece to lead Kalani (9-5) to a 23-25, 25-18, 25-22 upset of Western Division champion 'Aiea (11-2) in the quarterfinal round of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Girls Division I Volleyball Tournament at Na Ali'i's gym.

Kalani, the fourth seed from the Eastern Division, will meet East No. 2 Roosevelt, Thursday, 6 p.m. at McKinley. The game will be televised statewide by OC-16. Kahuku (11-3) plays Moanalua (12-1) in the other semifinal at 7:30 p.m.

All fours teams earned berths in the HHSAA state tournament, Nov. 6-9, on O'ahu. 'Aiea and McKinley, who will meet for fifth place, also qualified for the state tournament.

'Aiea beat Pearl City, 15-25, 25-21, 25-20, in a consolation semifinal that immediately followed the match.

After splitting the first two games, the Lady Falcons took a 10-2 lead in game three. Na Ali'i used an 11-3 run that included six Kalani errors and a backrow attacker violation to tie it at 13.

Kalani coach Daryl Tamashiro, despite the 'Aiea rally, didn't call a timeout. "Part of it is getting these guys to learn to battle through things," he said. "It's easy for me to call a timeout, but I have enough faith in these guys that they would get it back to us."

There were 10 ties and 11 lead changes in the third game.

"(Tamashiro) told us right now that we have to push and if we lost that game, we'd have to play the game right after," Iwamoto said. "He said we want to win this game right now, get into states and go home already."

'Aiea took its first lead at 16-15 on a hitting error by Kalani, but the Lady Falcons benefitted from three consecutive Na Ali'i errors to reclaim the lead 18-17.

'Aiea's Rachel Purcell had four of her nine kills in the third game, including one to tie it at 21. Following a Kalani hitting error, Iwamoto nailed two consecutive kills to make it 23-22.

A Na Ali'i hitting error gave Kalani match point, which Iwamoto put away.

Brandi Pascua-Aipa had a match-high 10 kills to lead 'Aiea.
