If Boston College junior forward Satoshi Mitsuda had his way, no one would know about his latest honor.
The former All-State soccer player and 2003 Punahou graduate was nominated and is still alive in the Seventeen Magazine's Seventeen Hottest Guys in America contest. Since Oct. 3, the Web site began accepting votes, with the lowest vote getter being eliminated.
"I'm pretty sure I'm still in the running because there is a select group of people who keep voting for me," he said.
He doesn't know how he was nominated, but if he wins, he hopes "nothing too embarrassing," goes into his awards ceremony.
He accepted because he received a free trip to Los Angeles, and got to visit with friend and former teammate Stephen Carlson, a Punahou graduate who plays soccer for Loyola Marymount.
At the shoot, he was "treated really well."
"The hairdresser used to work in Europe and she did a lot of gigs with soccer teams, so she was telling me how the product she was using was from Japan," Mitsuda said. "It was literally like Elmer's Glue. And I never wear anything in my hair. They put powder on. Some guys had lip gloss. It was definitely not something where I was like, 'Oh, I really want to do this again.' "
Mitsuda is redshirting this season because early in the summer, he was hiking and a boulder rolled over his left foot, dislocating his ankle and breaking a bone in his shin. He can run but will likely need another minor surgery to remove scar tissue.
