Smell of smoke reported on plane

An odor of smoke prompted the pilot of an Island Air plane with 18 people aboard to make an emergency landing yesterday at Kahului Airport.
Flight 404 from Lihu'e landed safely at 4:40 p.m. and no injuries were reported. The DASH-8 aircraft was pulled out of service to investigate what caused the odor. Fifteen passengers and three crew members were taken off the plane while it was still on the runway.
State Transportation Department spokesman Scott Ishikawa said the shorter of Kahului Airport's two runways was closed for about 30 minutes but the closure did not affect other commercial flights.
Island Air Flight 404 left Lihu'e, Kaua'i, for Kahului at 3:45 p.m.

WOMAN BURNED; MAN CHARGED
A 51-year-old woman hospitalized with first-degree burns to her face and body told police she was doused with gasoline and set on fire, according to a police report filed in District Court.
In statements to fire department investigator Scot Seguirant on Friday and police arson investigator Detective Gary Lahens on Monday, Marie Siarot said Kim R. Massey, 50, used a lighter to set her ablaze Thursday in the bedroom of a Ho-nokai Hale residence at 92-391 Wai'omea Street.
Massey was charged yesterday with first-degree arson and attempted second-degree murder. Prosecutors are requesting $100,000 bail.
Massey's initial appearance is today at District Court.
According to the affidavit, Siarot said she and Massey had argued about the sale of personal properties before she was set on fire. Massey told Seguirant that he tripped while carrying a can of gasoline to light a kerosene lamp, the affidavit said.

MISSING CHILDREN FOUND; DAD JAILED
Big Island police have found two children who were reported missing after a visit with their birth father, who was arrested on suspicion of custodial interference.
Lebrado Cabanting Jr., 36, was being held at the Hilo police cellblock while police continue their investigation. Police found Cabanting and the two boys, age 10 and 12, at 11:30 a.m. yesterday in the Orchidland Estates subdivision in Puna. The children are in good health, police said.
The boys' mother reported that she dropped her sons off with their father Saturday morning, but that he didn't return them at a pre-arranged time later that evening.

SCHOOL'S CLUB WANTS HI 5¢ CANS
Kaimuki High School's Chinese Club will hold a HI 5¢ recycle drive from 9 to 11 a.m. tomorrow in the school's side parking lot.
People may also drop off redeemable beverage containers during the daytime at the school's office. Please label the bags as for the "Chinese Club at Kaimuki High School." Money raised will benefit the club's scholarship program.

PUNCH IN THE FACE LEADS TO ARREST
A 20-year-old man was arrested yesterday morning after he allegedly punched another man while stopped in traffic.
At 6:45 a.m., the 19-year-old was driving two children to school on Kamehameha Highway in Pearl City when he stopped behind the 20-year-old. The drivers knew each other, police said.
The 20-year-old got out of his car with a baseball bat, walked up to the 19-year-old's driver's side window, punched him in the face and then drove away, police said.

TWO IN CUSTODY AFTER CAB DRIVER ROBBED
An 18-year-old man and a boy were arrested Tuesday after a taxi driver was robbed at knifepoint in the Sand Island area, police said.
The 45-year-old taxi driver picked up two people about 10:15 p.m. at the Kalihi Shopping Center and drove them to the Sand Island area. Upon arrival, one of the passengers pulled a knife, held it to the taxi driver's throat and demanded money.
The pair got out and ran away. The taxi driver called police. Responding patrol officers searched the area and arrested an 18-year-old and the boy on suspicion of first-degree robbery.
