Boise State rallies past UH in soccer

Senior Brennan Lau scored in the 75th minute to lift Boise State to a 3-2 victory over Hawai'i in a Western Athletic Conference women's soccer match yesterday at Boise, Idaho.

Boise State is 6-5-1 overall and 1-1 in the WAC. Hawai'i is 7-6-2 and 3-2.

UH took a 2-0 lead in the first half on goals by Ambree Ako (19th minute) and Jessica Domingo (25th minute).

Boise State's Annie Tom, a Mililani High alum, scored in the 33rd minute to close UH's lead to 2-1.

Kristen Hall's shot from 15 yards out tied the game at 2.

UH returns home to play Louisiana Tech on Friday at Waipi'o Peninsula Soccer Stadium.


GOLF

ROLFING'S ROLE EXPANDED

Maui resident Mark Rolfing will have a new and expanded role when the Golf Channel tees off its contract with the PGA Tour's Mercedes Championship in January.

Rolfing, a former Kapalua pro, will have both play-by-play and analyst responsibilities for the tour's first two events, the Mercedes and Sony Open in Hawai'i.

"It is sort of a hybrid role," Rolfing said. "It will obviously be good for me and hopefully for Hawai'i."

Nick Faldo, Dottie Pepper and Rocco Mediate will be among the others working the Hawai'i telecasts.

An announcement is expected today.

The Golf Channel won a 15-year deal with the PGA Tour earlier this year, replacing ESPN.

Rolfing also will remain an analyst with NBC, where he will be starting his 13th year. This will be his seventh year with the Golf Channel.

PORTER-KING ADVANCES

Mary Bea Porter-King of Lihu'e, Kaua'i, shot an 10-over par 81 yesterday and advanced to match play at the USGA Senior Women's Amateur Championship in St. Simons Island, Ga.

Porter-King finished stroke play at 15-over 157 and was tied for 25th. The top 64 golfers advanced.

Cecilia Mourgue D'Algue of France, shot a 69 and was medalist at 145.

Other Hawai'i golfers who missed the cut were Bev Kim of Wahiawa (87-171), Lily Yao of Honolulu (93-181) and Michiko Kimura of Kapolei (87-181).

Porter-King faces Maggie Scott of Charleston, Tenn., in today's first round of match play.


SURFING

PATACCHIA, POWERS OUT

Hawai'i surfers Fred Patacchia Jr. and Roy Powers were eliminated in the second round of the Billabong Pro Mundaka yesterday.

The second round was completed in 2- to 3-foot waves at Mundaka, Spain.

France's Mikael Picon defeated Patacchia, 16.2-13.83; Florida's Cory Lopez defeated Powers, 16.33-8.67.

Hawai'i surfers Andy Irons, Bruce Irons and Pancho Sullivan received byes in the second round and will compete in the third round.


BOXING

LOO WINS NATIONAL TITLE

Mililani's Colleen Loo decisioned Adri Harding of San Diego, 28-10, to win the 101-pound title at the National P.A.L. Championships at Oxnard, Calif., Saturday night.

Loo, ranked No. 1 in her class by USA Boxing, also was named the outstanding female boxer of the meet.

The Mililani High alum trains with PearlSide Boxing Club and is coached by Don Casil.


SAILING

UH COED TEAM FOURTH

The University of Hawai'i co-ed team finished fourth and women's team ninth in the two-day Stoney Burke Intersectional, which ended yesterday in San Francisco.

Stanford scored 74 points to win the meet. UH coed scored 107 points and UH's women scored 185.

Sailing for the UH coed squad were Mike Scott, Mark Spector, Becky Mabardy, Andrew Meade, Will Whitman, Cassie Harris and Caitlin Hill. Shandy Bukley, Pam Magasinn, Sarah Dosek, Crystal Bronte and Mallory McCollum sailed for the Rainbow Wahine.


TRIATHLON

MARR, ROLLES TRIUMPH

Mililani's Tim Marr won the Ko Olina Triathlon yesterday, completing the 660-meter swim, 30-kilometer bike and 4.5-mile run in 1 hour, 21 minutes and 41 seconds. Honolulu's Ingrid Rolles won the women's title in 1:32:33. Chad Seymour was second overall in 1:23:13.
