"Can Honolulu Afford a Fixed-Rail Rapid Transit System, or Afford Not to?" — will be the question before a luncheon meeting next week of the Hawai'i Society of Corporate Planners. Discussing the pros and cons of the system favored by the city administration and the alternative of high-occupancy toll (HOT) lanes will be fixed-rail proponent Toru Hamayasu, chief of the city Transportation Planning Division, and Cliff Slater, longtime fixed-rail skeptic and HOT advocate. The city's first phone notification of March's Waikiki sewage disaster to the subsequent handling of both the logistics and "crisis communications" needed afterward, will be discussed Wednesday at a buffet luncheon meeting of the International Association of Business Communicators.
