KOCHI, Japan — Hawai'i's Michelle Wie struggled to an 8-over-par 80 in today's second round and missed the cut in the Japan Golf Tour's Casio World Open.

Wie, who opened with an 81, had six bogeys and a double bogey today and finished at 17-over 161 at the par-72 Kuroshio Country Club. She failed to make a birdie in the tournament.

The Punahou School senior finished one stroke better than Japan amateur Tomomichi Oto, who shot 79 today for 162 and finished last among 101 golfers.

"It was pretty tragic, that's how I'd describe it," Wie said. "My driver wasn't working at all and that put a lot of pressure on my short game."

Japan's Tetsuya Haraguchi shot a 68 and was the halfway leader at 10-under 134. Indonesia's Jeeve Milkha Singh was second at 69—135.

Hawai'i's Gregory Meyer rallied from an opening 76 with a 68 today and made the cut at even par 144.

The 17-year-old Wie has made the cut in one of her 12 starts on men's tours. That came in May in the Asian Tour's SK Telecom Open in South Korea.

In her recent men's events, she withdrew from the John Deere Classic because of heat exhaustion after playing 27 holes in 8 over and finished last in the European Masters (78-79) and 84 Lumber Classic (77-81).

She said the poor performances wouldn't deter her from playing in men's events.

"Not at all," said Wie, winless in 33 career LPGA Tour appearances. "I didn't play like myself today and it doesn't bother me because I know I can play much better than this."

Wie was making her second appearance at the $1.19 million event in Japan. Last year, she bogeyed her final two second-round holes to miss the cut by a stroke.
