Woman hurt in copter accident

The Federal Aviation Administration said it will investigate an incident in which a helicopter struck a tree and rolled onto its side yesterday.
Maui police said a strong gust of wind blew the privately owned aircraft into a tree as it was trying to land at the Wailuku Country Estates, an agricultural subdivision at the base of 'Iao Valley and above Wailuku.
A female passenger from Honolulu suffered minor injuries. The pilot was uninjured, police said.
Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Mike Fergus said the aircraft was a Robinson helicopter model R44.
Helicopters are permitted to land on private property, but they are not permitted to operate in a hazardous manner that would damage personal property, he said.
Fire Battalion Chief Jeff Shaffer said the helicopter was landing at an Anekona Street residence at Wailuku Country Estates. The pilot and passenger were able to get out of the aircraft before fire and rescue crews arrived, Shaffer said.
Firefighters had to contain a fuel leak from the aircraft.

'PICKLE LADY' TO SHARE TECHNIQUES
Wahiawa Public Library will feature author and noted "scratch" cooking enthusiast Leonora Ching, known as the "Pickle Lady," in a free program 6 p.m. June 13.
Ching, a retired occupational therapist, will demonstrate some of her recipes ranging from pickled and preserved fruits, vegetables, seafood and eggs, to hot sauces, and will share some techniques on how to prepare them. Food samples will be available to taste.
The one-hour program is suitable for ages 12 to adult, and will be held in the library's meeting room.

PREGNANT WOMAN RUN OVER BY CAR
Police yesterday arrested a man in Nanakuli after a 26-year-old pregnant woman was run over by a car, officials said.
The woman was taken to The Queen's Medical Center in serious condition, Emergency Services Department spokesman Bryan Cheplic said.
Police arrested a 43-year-old man, identified as the woman's boyfriend, on suspicion of second-degree attempted murder.

4,640 MARIJUANA PLANTS SEIZED
Big Island police recovered 4,640 marijuana plants Thursday in South Kohala.
Hilo and Kona vice officers found 18 plots of marijuana plants from 1 to 3 feet tall growing on state land that is part of the Pu'uanahulu hunting area. Each plot contained 200 to 300 plants, police said.
The illegal crops were being irrigated by a simple watering system, with plants grown atop rectangular containers filled with water and nutrients, police said. The irrigation system had become a breeding ground for mosquitoes, which swarmed the officers while they seized the plants.
Also found at the site were plastic bags, hoses and rubbish.
