So much more than a day off from work, today is all about remembrance. Here are suggestions from usmemorialday.org on observing Memorial Day:

  • Visit cemeteries of our heroes and place flags or flowers on their graves.

  • Visit memorials.

  • Pledge to donate to or volunteer for organizations that aid widows, widowers and orphans of fallen soldiers, and disabled veterans.

    MOVIES TO FUEL YOUR BRAIN

Forget those mind-numbing summer blockbusters. Catch a flick with a cause this summer at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa Cinema Series, "Beyond Oil," which focuses on alternative energy sources worldwide.

The 10-part series runs at 5 p.m. on Sundays, starting next Sunday with "The Oil Factor." All screenings will be in Spalding Auditorium. Admission is $5, $3 for UH students and faculty. On-campus parking is free on Sundays. Details: 223-0130.

    FINAL WORD

"Happiness, it seems, doesn't like people who are desperate for it. The desperate pursuit of happiness is one of the chief causes of unhappiness."
