Mayhem is back in a giant way.
Jason "Mayhem" Miller defeated Stefan Gamlin in the main event of the Icon Sport mixed martial arts card last night.
A crowd of around 3,500 at the Blaisdell Center Arena watched Miller win the rare open-weight bout. Miller is 6 feet 1 and weighed around 200 pounds for the bout; Gamlin is 6-7 and weighed around 350.
And it wasn't even close.
Miller forced Gamlin to submit just 46 seconds into the first round with an arm-triangle chokehold.
"It was important to show that this is a showcase of skills and not just brutal strength," Miller said. "It was cool to exhibit my skills against a big strong guy like that."
Miller danced around the ring in the opening seconds, and then tackled Gamlin to the canvas moments later. Within a few seconds, Miller had the chokehold applied.
"I don't go into fights with a set plan," Miller said. "But I keep in mind that I need to be ready to use all my moves. I wasn't about to do anything stupid against a really big and strong guy like that."
Miller improved to 15-4, including 6-0 in Hawai'i. Gamlin dropped to 0-3. It was Miller's first bout since October. He was suspended for four months by the Icon Sport organization following his arrest on a first-degree burglary charge in December.
Miller is still the No. 1 contender in Icon Sport's 185-pound class. His next bout is expected to be against champion Robbie Lawler.
In a featured bout, Hawai'i's Tyson Nam earned an inspiring victory over Bill Dexter of West Virginia. Nam won the three-round bout by unanimous decision.
It was Nam's first appearance since his older brother Jason was shot and killed in a still-unsolved case in March.
Nam controlled the entire fight, and opened a gash over Dexter's eye in the first round. Nam improved to 2-0; Dexter dropped to 7-1.
In another featured bout, Hawai'i's Anthony Torres defeated Jerry Hackney of West Virginia by TKO in the first round.
Torres worked his way into the mount position on top of Hackney, and then unleashed a flurry of punches. The referee stopped the bout 4:12 into the first round.
Torres, who was a participant on the television reality show "The Ultimate Fighter," improved to 4-1. Hackney dropped to 7-4.
