Maui Boy Scouts select two Distinguished Citizens

WAILUKU, Maui — Maui businessmen and philanthropists Johnny Baldwin and Dorvin D. Leis have been named 2006 Distinguished Citizens by the Maui County Council of the Boy Scouts of America.
The Maui-born Baldwin is the grandson of Harold K.L. and Alice Castle and Frank F. and Harriet Baldwin. In 1965, he formed Haleakala Storage & Transfer, which he ran until selling the company in 1991. Baldwin had numerous other business interests and is general partner of JKT Partnership, which owns commercial properties in Makawao.
An avid fisherman, he established the Ma'alaea Charter Skipper's Association and was owner of his own sportfishing charter business. He is also a director of the Harold K.L. Castle Foundation and president of the Samuel N. and Mary Castle Foundation, and is a supporter of numerous other nonprofit groups.
Leis came to Maui in 1967 to help build a Travel Lodge in Lahaina, and later started Dorvin D. Leis Co., which has become the state's largest mechanical contractor, with annual revenues of up to $100 million. Leis' business interests employ more than 850 people in Hawai'i and other states.
He is a founding member of the Maui Arts and Cultural Center, and also has been an active supporter of Maui Community College, the University of Hawai'i Foundation, Hospice Maui and the Maui Chamber of Commerce.
The two will be honored at a dinner at 6 p.m. June 10 at the Hyatt Regency Maui. Tickets are $125 per person or $1,100 for a table of 10. For reserved seating, call (808) 244-3724 by May 23.
