'Ma' Pua Lusa fulfills wish in 'Somebody' at DHT

HANA HOU: Look for Loretta Ables Sayre to reprise her role as "Ma" Pua Lusa, in the Lee Cataluna comedy (with music by Keola Beamer) "You Somebody," which Diamond Head Theatre will revive to cap its 2006-07 season. The show, opening July 17, 2007, is about a mythical family matriarch (Ables Sayre) who reads this column and yearns to see her name in print. So she desperately enters any and every contest in attempt to become a Harada-fied "somebody." One casting challenge: to find an actor to play the spouse role originated by the late Ray Bumatai.

Ables Sayre just appeared at DHT's new-season announcement for backers; it's hard to imagine anyone else with Pua's comedic zeal and spirit of achievement. ...

HITHER 'N' YON: When Duane "Dog" Chapman and Beth Smith arrived at Deep Blue last Thursday for a preview of their No. 1 A&E reality series, "Dog the Bounty Hunter" (its third season launched Tuesday), the crowd included police, a judge, attorneys galore and some bounty hunters. With the show's hit status has come growing fame: The couple now is mobbed and stopped for pics and autographs. At the Hyatt Regency Waikiki port-cochere, the couple ran into actor and pal Stephen Baldwin, here to speak at a Christian missionary event. This week the "Bounty" stars are off to promote the show, hitting Fox News, CNN, "Jimmy Kimmel Live" and more. ...

Hapa winds up its cross-country tour with Island shows at 7:30 p.m. April 8 at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center and at 7:30 p.m. May 6 at the Hawai'i Convention Center. Hapa — Nathan Aweau and Barry Flanagan — and chanter Charles Ka'upu, hula dancers Malia Petersen and Pi'ilani Klein recently toured the nation's capital and had breakfast with Sen. and Mrs. Daniel Akaka and his press secretary, Donalyn Dela Cruz. ...

Former Honolulu Symphony music director Donald Johanos, retired and living in Naples, Fla., recently was diagnosed with kidney failure, complicated by a weakened heart. He was hospitalized at Naples Community Hospital for more than two weeks, undergoing treatment and dialysis, according to Bob Sandla, former executive director of the orchestra, who has stayed in touch with the former maestro. TV show "Ohana Road" is marking its third anniversary Saturday with a hoopla planned at the Waikiki Yacht Club. Dale Payson and Anita Hall are hosts, with segments by Andy Bumatai, Augie T and Pipi. The show airs at 6 p.m. Saturdays and 11 p.m. Sundays on KITV4. ...

Danny Kaleikini and Linda Wong were guests of Wayne Newton at the Las Vegas superstar's show at the Flamingo Hilton on Saturday night. Here at home, Kaleikini is being honored March 31 at the Hawai'i Theatre in a St. Francis Healthcare Foundation-Hawaiian KINE Radio fundraiser, with numerous troupers previously associated with Kaleikini or the former Kahala Hilton resort participating from the stage — the likes of Nalani Olds, Kit Samson, Cathy Foy, Jimmy Borges and others. ...
