Chaminade wins DII regional opener

Advertiser Staff

Chris Reaves scored a game-high 32 points, including 19 in the first half, as third-seeded Chaminade smashed sixth-seeded Alaska Anchorage yesterday, 84-67, and advanced to the NCAA Division II West Regional semifinals today in Seattle.

The Silverswords (19-8) will play second-seeded Western Washington (22-6), a 100-86 winner yesterday over seventh-seeded Humboldt State, at 3 p.m. today in Seattle Pacific's Royal Brougham Pavilion. Alaska Anchorage (19-12) was eliminated from the tournament.

This is Chaminade's first NCAA Division II Tournament appearance. The Silverswords are led by first-year head coach Matt Mahar.

"I thought our guys came out really hard, and played well," Mahar said. "I thought we played a lot of good defense."

Reaves, a 6-foot-3 senior guard, shot 12 of 19 from the field, including 5 of 8 from 3-point range. He also had five assists, three rebounds and two steals.

Reaves, who was named to the all-West Region second team Thursday, is averaging 35 points per game in Chaminade's past four victories.

"He was great as usual," Mahar said. "I think he proved he should be on that (all-West Region) first team."

Chaminade reserve post player Marko Kolaric had 14 points and 14 rebounds, and point guard Zack Whiting added 11 points, 12 assists and seven rebounds.

The Silverswords shot 64 percent (15 of 23) from the floor in the second half, and finished at 54 percent (32 of 59). They also outrebounded the Seawolves, 38-28, and had 22 assists.

"I thought that was a huge factor with the rebounding margin," Mahar said.

Reeves hit a pair of back-to-back 3-pointers to finish off a 15-2 run as Chaminade took control early, opening a 17-5 lead at the 13:38 mark of the first half.

The Seawolves closed to within 24-19 with 8:42 left in the half, but Chaminade scored the next four points and stretched its lead to 39-26 at the break.

Alaska Anchorage started the second half with a 9-0 run to pull to 39-35 on a field goal by Luke Cooper, a layup and 3-pointer by Adam Fitt-Chappell and a layup by James Hartman.

Alaska Anchorage got within 41-37 on Kemmy Burgess' basket, but Dylan McCune's 3-pointer sparked a 20-8 Chaminade run as the team extended its lead to 61-45 with 7:38 left. During the surge, Reaves scored five points and Whiting four.

"We had to control the tempo a little better," Mahar said. "Get a couple of (defensive) stops, and get a bucket. That's all we needed to do at that point."

Alaska Anchorage never got closer than 13 the rest of the way.

Burgess, a senior guard, and sophomore forward Joe Davis each had 12 points for Alaska Anchorage. Hartman, a senior forward, had eight points and nine rebounds.

Today's opponent, Western Washington, is led by forward Grant Dykstra and guard Ryan Diggs. Dykstra, the all-West Region Player of the Year, averages 20.9 points, 5.6 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 2.2 steals per game. Diggs, an all-West Region first-team honoree, averages 21 points, 4.4 assists and 3.9 rebounds per game.

"I think if we come ready to play, it will be another good game," Mahar said. "They shoot the ball well."
