'Bows' Huang earns berth in NCAA diving

University of Hawai'i diver QiongJie Huang finished second in the 1-meter springboard yesterday at the Zone E Regional in Oklahoma City and earned a berth in the NCAA championships.
USC's Blythe Hartley won with 670.10 points, followed by Huang (605.90), Stanford's Cassidy Krug (594.00) and Arizona's Tiffany Manning (580.95). The top four receive automatic berths.
Huang is the defending NCAA champion in the event. This year's meet is March 16 to 18 at Athens, Ga.
UH senior Rui Wang and junior Megan Farrow reached the finals yesterday. Wang finished fifth with a 570.00, while Farrow was sixth at 559.45.
The Zone E Regional continues today with the women's 3-meter springboard and platform tomorrow.
UH sophomore Mats Wiktorsson finished fourth with 696.65 points in the men's 3-meter springboard competition.
Arizona State's Joona Puhakka won with 879.95, followed by Utah's Sterling Richards (746.95) and Stanford's Dwight Dumais (699.65). The top three earn automatic NCAA berths.
Wiktorsson still has a chance at qualifying for the NCAA Championship in the 1-meter springboard today and the platform tomorrow.
The men's NCAA Swimming and Diving Championship is March 23 to 25 at Athens, Ga.
BASEBALL
HILO SWEEPS TEMPLE, IMPROVES TO 7-13
Michael Higa batted 4 for 4 with four RBIs as Hawai'i-Hilo swept a doubleheader from Temple with an 11-4 victory yesterday at Wong Stadium.
In the first game, A.J. Satele had two hits and drove in two runs in Hilo's 6-5 victory.
Hilo is 7-13; Temple is 2-7.

RAIN WASHES OUT STATE AMATEUR FIRST ROUND
The first round of the Hawai'i State Amateur Stroke Play Championship at Pearl Country Club was canceled yesterday because of rain.
The 72-hole tournament has been shortened to 54 holes with the cut coming after today's first round, weather permitting. The top 40 scores and ties will qualify for the final two rounds tomorrow and Sunday.
The first tee times for today's first round is 7 a.m. off both the first and tenth tees.

FIVE GAMES IN SPRING FLING CANCELED BY RAIN
Yesterday's five games of the University of Hawai'i's Spring Fling Softball Tournament were canceled because of heavy rain.
UH officials will evaluate the condition of the field at Rainbow Wahine Stadium today.
The round-robin games were scheduled to be played through today, with the championship bracket tomorrow.
UH was scheduled to play UC Santa Barbara and Detroit Mercy yesterday. The Rainbow Wahine have lost a potential eight games to inclement weather this season.
WATER POLO
NO. 5 UH PLAYS NO. 13 IRVINE IN HOME OPENER
Fifth-ranked Hawai'i plays at home for the first time this year, facing 13th-ranked UC Irvine tomorrow at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
The Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match starts at 4:30 p.m.
All but one of the 13 MPSF members are ranked. The Rainbow Wahine (6-6) have played 11 ranked opponents this season.
Freshman Kelly Mason leads Hawai'i with 23 goals. All-American Iefke Van Belkum has 21 . Meike De Nooy set a school record with 17 saves in the 'Bows' last match.
Mason is tied for fifth in MPSF scoring, averaging 1.92 goals a match. Van Belkum is ninth at 1.75. De Nooy is second with 9.50 saves a game.
The Anteaters (8-7) have defeated Hawai'i once in nine meetings.
