TONIGHT'S MUST-SEE

"Kyle XY" debut, 8 p.m., ABC Family. At first it seems like someone has simply rewritten Fox's "John Doe" series, trimming the ages and the budget. Again, a naked guy is found alone in the wild. He doesn't know who he is or how he got there; he does, however, have some nifty talents. Then comes the family spin: A psychologist names him Kyle and take him to her home and her kids. He mixes with other teens. He stands up to a bully and falls for a neighbor girl. This may be John Doe Lite, but it works. Viewers will understand Kyle's overwhelmed feeling; they'll grasp feeling out of place. There are no big stars here. Matt Dallas plays Kyle and Marguerite MacIntyre is the psychologist. April Matson is her daughter, resisting the usual TV-teen cliches. They present warm characters. We quickly start hoping Kyle will find his way.

OF NOTE

"Broken Trail" conclusion, 5 p.m., AMC, re-running at 6:45. If you missed the start of this well-made miniseries yesterday, you still have another chance; it reruns at 6 p.m. If you don't have time for that, we'll summarize: Robert Duvall and Thomas Haden Church play decent cowboys, leading 500 horses on a massive drive. They killed a nasty slave-trader and ended up with five Chinese women who were being taken into prostitution. Now they must help the women, drive the horses and be on the eye for a killer hired by a vengeful brothel-owner.

"The Closer," 6 p.m., TNT. A triple murder is assumed to be gang-related.

"Treasure Hunters," 7 and 8 p.m., NBC. When the hockey finals went to seven games, "Treasure Hunters" was thrown off schedule. Current plans call for NBC to rerun a shortened version of the June 18 debut at 7 p.m. and then follow with the second episode at 8. Nine teams, each with three people, are crossing the country, seeking clues.

"Hell's Kitchen," 7 and 8 p.m., Fox. First is a rerun with each team trying to prepare full dinner services. Then is a new episode: The teams are re-arranged and must prepare a lunch for kids.

"How I Met Your Mother," 7:30 p.m., CBS. Ted wants to date a woman he once rejected.

"Two and a Half Men," 8 p.m., CBS. In a terrific episode, Alan is recovering from an injury. That puts Charlie in charge of Jake.

"The New Adventures of Old Christine," 8:30 p.m., CBS. A dinner brings together Christine's ex-husband and her new boyfriend. It also makes her re-think her relationship with her ex.

"How Art Made the World" debut, 10 p.m., PBS. It probably won't surprise us that humans in many places have found the naked body to be interesting. What might surprise us is the change in emphasis. Nigel Spivey, an art historian, uses vivid illustrations to take us from ancient emphasis on grotesquely exaggerated breasts to the Greeks' exaggerated muscle tone and beyond.
