ISLAND LIFE SHORTS
Send Island joe to the troops
Advertiser Staff and News Services
Kona-born Bad Ass Coffee may not be locally owned anymore (it was bought in 1995 and is now based in Utah), but its stock in trade is still Hawaiian coffee. And now through its "Cup O' Joe for a Soldier" program you can send a G.I. Joe some Island joe.
Soldiers and field operations make coffee requests and donors pay for them. Bad Ass ships the coffee for free. So far, more than 600 donors have bought large bags of Hawaiian blends at $11.95 a pop. You can make your caffeinated contribution at www.badasscoffee.com/cupojoe.
CANTOMA IN CHINATOWN
DJ Phil Mison, aka Cantoma, has never been to Hawai'i, but says via an e-mail, "from the photos I've seen, it looks amazing. I'm really looking forward to coming over." This from the man who for two years laid down the soundtrack for the famous Cafe del Mar club on the fabulous summer party island of Ibiza.
The globe-trotting Brit is in town to play his CDs and records ("I still don't think you can beat vinyl") at thirtyninehotel (39 N. Hotel St., 599-2552) 9 p.m.-2 a.m. tomorrow. Cover: $7.
FINAL WORD
"I don't think there's been a single young writer who has influenced people in recent years. It will happen."
