"Monster Garage" made host Jesse James into a star, and it gave the once-studious Discovery Channel, a macho, tattooed image.

TONIGHT'S MUST-SEE

"The Closer" season opener, 6 p.m., TNT; repeats at 8. Here is the ideal for any crime show — a great character, facing complex and perplexing cases. Brenda Johnson (brilliantly played by Kyra Sedgwick) is a deputy police chief in Los Angeles. Fresh from Atlanta, she offers a veneer of soft, Southern charm. Beneath that is a sharp mind and a relentless soul. She won't give up. That's important tonight when a cop is killed. His colleagues want to handle the case and wrap it up neatly; Brenda keeps digging.

OF NOTE

"Stanley Cup Finals," 2 p.m., NBC. Here's the fourth game of the best-of-seven Stanley Cub finals with Carolina at Edmonton.

"Monster Garage" finale, 5 p.m., Discovery Channel. When this show first aired in 2002, it had an instant impact. It made host Jesse James into a star; it gave the once-studious network a macho, tattooed image. Tonight, there will be clips and highlights, plus a new project — remodeling a 1954 Ford station wagon.

"Look, Up in the Sky! The Amazing Story of Superman," 5 p.m., A&E. A look back at past Superman movies as the newest one nears.

"Saved" debut, 7 p.m., TNT. Tom Everett Scott stars as a paramedic who is surrounded by doctors — including his ex-girlfriend and father. They consider him an underachiever, especially since he's buried in gambling debts. This is a richly layered character but one who's hard to warm up to. We'll give him time.

"Hell's Kitchen" season opener, 7 p.m., Fox. This often-awful show only reminds us how much we like "American Idol." Both shows have an acerbic Englishman saying nasty things about optimistic Americans.

"How to Get the Guy" debut, 9 p.m., ABC. This series has two coaches working with four single women from San Francisco. Tonight, viewers might quickly be attached to Anne, who became a makeup artist after her employer in the financial industry went out of business.
