POLICE BEAT
Military may help identify remains

Advertiser Staff

Big Island police plan to consult with an anthropologist from the Joint POW Accounting Command at Hickam Air Force Base in an effort to identify human remains found in a locked building in Puna Thursday.

Police were called by a neighbor at 10:48 a.m. to a property on 24th Avenue in the Hawaiian Paradise Park, where they found the remains in a locked "makeshift" structure.

The human remains were taken to Hilo Medical Center, but a forensic pathologist there was unable to determine the cause of death or the gender of the remains because of the advanced state of decomposition.

Police said there was no evidence of foul play. They also will seek the assistance of a forensic dental specialist to help identify the remains.

KURTISTOWN CRASH VICTIM IDENTIFIED

A man who died Thursday from injuries he suffered in a two-truck crash at the intersection of Volcano Highway and Huina Road in Kurtistown has been identified as Stanley S. Shibuya, 67, of Kurtistown.

Shibuya was traveling east on Huina Road in a 1998 Dodge pickup when a 1992 Mazda pickup traveling south crashed into him as he crossed the intersection shortly before 6:10 a.m.

The driver of the Mazda, a 38-year-old Mountain View man, was not injured. He told police his brakes failed and he was unable to stop.

Shibuya died at Hilo Medical Center at 9:37 a.m.

Police have not determined if speed or alcohol were factors, and have ordered an autopsy.

Shibuya's death is the 15th traffic fatality on the Big Island this year, which is the same number of fatalities as by this date last year.

MOPED RIDER KILLED IN CRASH IDENTIFIED

The city Department of the Medical Examiner has identified Juan P. Carvallo, 27, of Hale'iwa, as the moped rider who was killed Wednesday night after being struck by a car.

Carvallo was riding along Kamehameha Highway toward Wahiawa, near a road that leads to the Helemano military housing area, at about 11:20 p.m. when he was struck from behind.

A Windward O'ahu man whom police believe was driving the car that struck Carvallo was arrested on suspicion of negligent homicide and fleeing the scene of an accident.

TWO MEN ARRESTED IN LCC CAR BREAK-IN

Police arrested two men, ages 27 and 43, Thursday afternoon after they allegedly broke into a car in the Leeward Community College parking lot and then crashed into three vehicles as police gave chase.

At about 4:15 p.m. a witness to the break-in reported to police that two men who had been in a car circling the lot broke into another car. A second witness called 911 to provide the license- plate number of the car the men had been riding in. Police dispatchers quickly determined the car had been reported stolen.

Officers saw that car speeding away from the scene. The driver ignored the officers' instructions to pull over, and police pursued the car until it hit three other vehicles and left the scene. Several minutes later, yet another witness called police to say a car had been abandoned in 'Aiea.

Police then closed in on a house that they said is known for criminal activity and found two men that matched the description of those involved in the break-in. Witnesses identified the pair and they were arrested.

WAIPAHU RESIDENTS FLEE CHEMICAL ODOR

Residents of an apartment building at 94-120 Pupukahi St. in Waipahu were evacuated as a precaution while emergency response workers cleared the source of a chemical odor yesterday.

At 11:30 p.m. city Emergency Medical Service workers transported a 34-year-old man to St. Francis West in stable condition after the man complained of dizziness and nausea, according to an EMS official. He was later released.

A 53-year-old woman and a 5-year-old girl also were treated at the scene and released.

HFD Capt. Sigmund Oka said it appears that a container of Malathion, a pesticide, was dumped at the base of a tree in front of the building.

Oka said tests are under way to try to identify exactly what the source of the odor is.

He said city paramedics examined several people who live in the apartment building.
