Missouri upsets Pepperdine, 8-3

MALIBU, Calif. — Brock Bond went 4 for 5 with an RBI as fourth-seeded Missouri advanced to the super regionals for the first time with an 8-3 victory over top-seeded Pepperdine in the Malibu Regional yesterday.

Derek Chambers went 2 for 4 with an RBI and scored twice for the Tigers (35-26), who took an early 7-0 lead and became the first No. 4 seed to make it to the super regionals. Missouri will play No. 5 national seed Cal State Fullerton next weekend, with the winner of the best-of-three series advancing to the College World Series.

Taylor Parker (4-4) gave up two runs on five hits in 5 2/3 innings for the victory, the Tigers' fourth straight after dropping the regional opener to Pepperdine on Friday.

Barry Enright (13-2) allowed three runs on six hits in 3 1/3 innings, and Justin Tellam went 2 for 3 with a homer for the Waves (42-21).

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. REGIONAL

SOUTH CAROLINA 5, EVANSVILLE 1

Wynn Pelzer threw an eight-hitter and Phil Disher hit his third home run in four games, lifting South Carolina past Evansville and into the super regionals for the sixth time in seven years.

Pelzer (5-4) struck out nine and had a shutout until the seventh for the Gamecocks (40-23).

Disher hit a three-run homer in the third to give South Carolina a 4-0 lead.

Kai Tuomi (6-2) took the loss for Evansville (43-22).

ATHENS, GA. REGIONAL

GEORGIA 3, FLORIDA STATE 2

Joey Side hit a two-run homer, and freshman Trevor Holder pitched six strong innings to lead Georgia to the super regionals.

Holder (4-3) allowed one run and four hits for the Bulldogs (45-20), who improved to 18-6 all-time in NCAA elimination games.

Side homered in the third to give the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead, and Jonathan Wyatt added a two-out RBI single in the eighth.

Mark Sauls (1-3) took the loss for the Seminoles (44-21).

HOUSTON REGIONAL

RICE 7, BAYLOR 4

Josh Rodriguez homered and Joe Savery scattered two hits over five innings to lead No. 2 national seed Rice into the super regionals.

After Baylor took a 3-0 lead in the third, the Owls (53-10) rallied with five runs in the bottom of the inning — all with two outs.

Savery (5-1) allowed three runs and struck out five, and Cole St. Clair got two outs for his 11th save.

Tim Matthews (6-5) took the loss for Baylor (37-26).

NORMAN, OKLA. REGIONAL

OKLAHOMA 7, WICHITA STATE 6

Chuckie Caufield hit a three-run homer to highlight Oklahoma's six-run second inning, and the Sooners held on to beat Wichita State and advance to the super regionals.

Joseph Hughes had three hits and drove in two runs as Oklahoma (44-20) won its first regional since 1995.

Oklahoma broke open the game in the second when Hughes had a two-run single, Caufield homered and Brandon Moss hit an RBI single — all with two outs — to give the Sooners a 6-0 lead.

Wichita State (46-22) got within a run with two runs each in the third, sixth and ninth innings before Daniel McCutchen got Derek Schermerhorn to hit into a force play with the tying run at third to end the game. McCutchen (9-8) threw 5 2/3 innings of relief.

3 'BOWS HONORED

CORVALLIS, Ore. — Four University of Hawai'i baseball players were named to the NCAA Corvallis All-Regional Team, as voted by the media.

Third baseman Justin Frash, outfielders Matt Inouye and Derek DuPree, and pitcher Ian Harrington were the Rainbows picked. Although DuPree played only the outfield, he was selected as the designated hitter.

The Rainbows arrived home yesterday.
