Hawai'i team wins regional soccer title

The Real Hawaii Futbol Club under-14 girls team, Real Copa '92, captured the US Club Soccer Regional Tournament in Las Vegas in June, and will play for the premier division national title at the National Cup V this weekend.

The National Cup V will be held in North Carolina from tomorrow through Tuesday. The team captured the premier division national title in 2002.

AIR RIFLERY

PUNAHOU FIFTH AT EVENT

Punahou School finished third in the scholastic team division at the National Junior Olympic 3-Position Air Rifle Championships, July 6 to 9, in Bowling Green, Ky.

Punahou finished the competition fifth overall.

Simone Riford, 18, a Kane'ohe resident and 2006 Punahou graduate, finished second overall in the individual competition. Riford will attend Texas Christian University in the fall and will shoot for the school's rifle team.

Other team members were:

  • Heather Horn, 17, a 2006 Punahou graduate. The 2005 Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion will attend the University of Nevada in the fall and compete for the Wolf Pack rifle team.

  • Rachel Tochiki, 15, a junior-to-be at Punahou.

  • Jon Onaga, 17, a 2006 graduate of Punahou, who will attend the University of California, Irvine next fall where he is planing to switch to air pistol as the Anteaters do not have a rifle team.

    WRESTLING

    ATHLETES PLACE AT MEET

    Kainoa Aragosa placed sixth in both Greco-Roman and Freestyle divisions, and Ikea Ikehara earned the highest finish for Team Hawai'i, placing fourth in Freestyle in the USA Wrestling Western Regional Championships, June 19 to 25, at Klamath Falls, Ore.

    Wrestlers needed to qualify for the tournament that featured competitors from Hawai'i, Alaska, California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Nevada, Utah and Arizona. Aragosa and Ikehara were two of the 19 wrestlers with the Leeward Cobras team.

    Midget ('96 -'97): 55 pounds—Kainoa Aragosa (Greco-Roman, 6th place; Freestyle, 6th). 60 pounds—Dylan Frank (GR, 7th.). 75 pounds—Micah Solis (GR, eliminated; FS, eliminated).

    Novice ('94-'95): 60 pounds—Anthony Kaulili (GR, 10th; FS, 7th); Jesse George (GR, 6th; FS, eliminated). 70 pounds—Steve Turner (GR, eliminated; FS, 8th); Gabriel Iereneo (GR, eliminated; FS, 7th). 75 pounds—Bryden Paonessa (GR, eliminated; FS, eliminated). 80 pounds—Jesse Tory (GR, 15th; FS, eliminated); Tyson Kuahine (GR, 14th; FS, 14th); Kainoa Perry (GR, eliminated; FS, eliminated). 100 pounds—Nakoa Chun (GR, eliminated; FS, eliminated). 105 pounds—Ikea Ikehara (GR, 10th; FS, 4th).

    Schoolboy ('92-'93): 85 pounds—Darius Anderson (GR, eliminated; FS, 6th); Joshua Loo (GR, eliminated; FS, eliminated). 115 pounds—Kelaiah Fonoti (GR, eliminated; FS, 11th). 120 pounds—Isaiah Fonoti (GR, 6th; FS, 8th). 125 pounds—William Kaina (GR, 8th; FS, 12th). 145 pounds—Kameona Hokoana (GR, 7th; FS, 5th).
