Federal expenditures on research at the University of Hawai'i-Manoa amounted to more than $187 million in fiscal year 2004, a more than 30 percent increase from the previous fiscal year, the National Science Foundation reported.

UH was ranked 25th among all public universities in the country for such expenditures. It was listed 47th — up from 54th — among all public and private universities.

"The data confirm the vitality of Manoa's research enterprise," Gary Ostrander, vice chancellor for research, said last week. "The fact is that we had the largest rate of growth from one year to the next — more than 30 percent — of any of the top 100 research institutions in the U.S. We are committed to growing our research programs here, and an important result of that commitment is the ability to provide more opportunities for undergraduates to participate in scholarship and discovery in a broad range of disciplines."
