Two former champions will square off for the Hawai'i State Women's Golf Association match play championship today at Oahu Country Club.

Lesly Ann Komoda, 37, who won this event in 1992, will meet Mari Chun, 18, who won it in 2004, for the title scheduled for 18 holes.

Komoda, a former pro who regained her amateur status to play, defeated defending champion Cyd Okino, 4 and 3, in the quarterfinal early yesterday and then beat Erin Matsuoka, 1-up, in the semifinal.

Chun, a Kamehameha Schools alum who recently finished her freshman year at Stanford, beat Desiree Ting, 2 and 1, in the quarterfinal, and Jaclyn Hilea, 3 and 2, in the semifinal.

Today's championship will start at 8 a.m.

In other quarterfinal matches yesterday, Hilea defeated Traci Kashiwabara-Ayabe, 3 and 2, and Matsuoka beat beat Kira-Ann Murashige, 1-up.

THREE FROM HAWAI'I REACH MATCH PLAY

Hawai'i golfers Tadd Fujikawa, Sean Maekawa and Casey Watabu were among 64 players yesterday to advance to match play of the 81st U.S. Amateur Public Links Championships at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash.

Fujikawa, of Honolulu, shot a 1-under 71 for a 36-hole total of 146. Maekawa, of Pa'auilo, Hawai'i, shot 76—148, and Watabu, of Kapa'a, Kaua'i, shot 76—148. The cutoff score was 150.

Mitch Cohlmia, of Tulsa, Okla., and Justin Metzger, of Knoxville, Tenn., shared medalist honors. Cohlmia shot 70 and Metzger 68 for 7-under 137 totals.

Three others from Hawai'i failed to qualify. Chan Kim, of Honolulu, shot 77—158, Kevin Shimomura, of Lahanina, Maui, shot 83—163, and Lee Sakugawa, of Wailuku, Maui, shot 82—164.

MOYNAHAN CAPTURES PGA PRO CHAMPIONSHIP

Brendan Moynahan, head pro at Hualalai Golf Club on the Big Island, shot a 3-over 75, but hung on to capture the Aloha Section PGA Professional Championship yesterday at the Makena Resort's South Course.

Moynahan finished with a 36-hole total of 143 and earned $2,500 with a three-stroke victory over Wailea Golf Club's Eliot Gouveia. Mauna Kea's Kevin Hayashi was two strokes back at 148.

All three qualified for the 40th PGA Professional National Championship to be held June 21 to 24, 2007 at Sunriver, Ore.

Moynahan will be making his eighth trip in the past nine years, while Hayashi will be going for the fourth straight year.
