Farrington crash kills man, hurts 2

A man was killed and two other men were seriously injured in a one-car accident early yesterday.
The city medical examiner's office identified the dead man as Havons Ludwig, 34, of Hono-lulu.
Ludwig was a front-seat passenger in a car that hit a tree on Farrington Highway near Waipahu High School about 12:55 a.m. yesterday.
Bryan Cheplic, spokesman for the city Department of Emergency Services, said Ludwig was listed in critical condition upon his arrival at The Queen's Medical Center and later died there.
He said the driver and a back-seat passenger arrived at Queen's in serious condition. Police said speed and alcohol appeared to be factors in the crash.

MOVIE ON CLIMATE FREE TO STUDENTS
High school and college students with ID will be admitted free tonight to two screenings of the global-warming movie, "An Inconvenient Truth," at the Varsity Twins theater. Show times are 6 and 8:30 p.m.
The Sierra Club and Paramount Pictures are sponsoring the free showings to increase awareness among young people of climate change caused by greenhouse gases.
Parents and teachers who accompany students also will be admitted at no charge. For all others a $20 donation will be requested.
Each screenings will be followed by a question-and-answer session. A limited number of T-shirts, DVDs, soundtracks, movie posters and other giveaways will be available.

GUNMAN ROBS WAIKELE RETAILER
A man brandishing what appeared to be a handgun robbed the Sunglass Hut at the Waikele Premium Outlets mall Tuesday afternoon.
An undisclosed amount of money was taken in the 3:45 p.m. robbery. The man, who ran away, was described as being in his mid-20s, 5 feet 7 inches and about 200 pounds.

COPPER-PIPE THIEVES ARRESTED
A 29-year-old woman and 33-year-old man were arrested Tuesday after they were caught allegedly stealing copper pipe from a chicken preparation plant on Kanakanui Street in Kalihi.
According to a police arrest log, the couple live on Mokauea Street, just a few blocks from the processing plant.
Officers from the Kalihi police district station found the pair about 7:30 a.m. in the building at 1804 Kanakanui St. and arrested them on suspicion of second-degree burglary.

RITES TO HONOR UNCLAIMED DEAD
Hawai'i State Hospital Patients who died at the facility during a three-decade period and whose remains were not claimed by family or friends will be remembered this morning in a ceremony in Kane'ohe.
The ceremony honors the 667 mental patients who died while staying at the mental hospital between 1930 and 1960. The patients were cremated and their remains stored unburied. In 1960, they were buried with two plaques that include the names of 540 knowns and 127 unknowns.
Former Hawai'i State Hospital Chaplain Clarence Liu will deliver a meditation honoring the patients. The ceremony is set for 10:30 at the Hawaiian Memorial Park cemetery.

HOSPITAL SERVICES HEARING PLANNED
A state agency will hold a hearing tomorrow on Maui Memorial Medical Center's application for a certificate of need for expansion of its cardiovascular services.
The hearing will begin at 9 a.m. at Baldwin High School's multipurpose room. The agency is the State Health Planning and Development Agency's Tri-Isle SubArea Council.
Hospital CEO Wesley Lo said in a statement that the expanded services will improve early detection and diagnosis and eliminate the need for many Maui residents to seek off-island treatment. On average, more than 200 patients leave each year to receive cardiac treatment on O'ahu or elsewhere, according to Maui Memorial statistics.
The new cardiovascular facility will perform percutaneous coronary interventions, an angiography procedure to clear blockages from arteries of the heart, and recruit staff to conduct open-heart surgeries.
The new program will be developed within the hospital's Heart, Brain & Vascular Center, with $1.5 million to be spent on new equipment.

REDEMPTION SITES TO BE ADDED
HI-5 redemption services on Moloka'i are being expanded, with mobile operations at two new locations.
Redeemable beverage containers will be accepted from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Kilohana Community Center on the first Wednesday of each month and at Maunaloa General Store on the second Wednesday of the month.

WOMAN ARRESTED IN KNIFE THREAT
A 22-year-old Wahiawa woman was arrested Tuesday after she allegedly threatened her husband, 28, with a kitchen knife.
Police were told that the pair were arguing about 1 p.m. when the wife went to the kitchen, returned with a large knife and held it in a menacing manner above her husband.
The husband said he was able to use an upright vacuum cleaner to disarm his wife.
Police were sent to the home on Alai Place and arrested the woman on suspicion of first-degree terroristic threatening.
HONOLULU
GOLF-CLUB ASSAULT SUSPECT ARRESTED
A 47-year-old man was arrested in the Vineyard Street area Tuesday night after a 26-year-old man told police a man hit him in the head with a golf club.
Police said two men were arguing about 8:40 p.m. when the younger man was struck with the golf club, opening a deep cut on one of his ears.
Police were called to the scene, the alleged attacker was identified and he was arrested on suspicion of second-degree assault.
