They're glancing memories that come at unexpected times.

It's often a face in the crowd with familiar features or a passing remark that brings back the memories of my parents long passed away. What follows is that uncontrollable choking sensation in my throat, then the welling of tears in my eyes.

They're glancing memories, but they're so full of love for those I miss very much.

I suppose someone witnessing my display of emotion would easily mistake it as an ordinary demonstration of human grief, but that is so far from the truth. The thoughts that flood my soul are not those of despair but instead of gratitude.

You see, my heart has been strengthened through life's journey because it wasn't traveled alone. I've had the presence of a faithful Lord and savior with me.

It's a relationship that has inspired and built confidence that everything he promises will come to pass.

I serve a "full service" God that has been faithful to me from the beginning.

Scripture says that the Lord is "the author and finisher of our faith." When we entrust our lives to him, he takes us along life's journey and teaches us every step of the way.

Our earthly needs are provided, our cares are at rest and our prayers are attended to.

Even though we don't need to ask God to prove himself, with every life encounter we face, we only become more filled with assurance that he has his hand on our lives.

So now that I see my own life entering the golden years of my journey, I reflect on the memories of my own departed parents and a sense of gratitude begins to flood my heart. You see, Jesus also said, "In my father's house there are many mansions and I will go there to prepare a place for you."

Yes, I'll see my parents again because we shared this common faith in the Lord's promise and I'm very grateful for that.

But I am also grateful because my life with him has taught me that our welfare is God's concern from beginning to end.
