2,300 lose power in Nanakuli

A power outage in the Nanakuli area left more than 2,300 customers without electricity late last night.

Sharon Higa, a spokeswoman for Hawaiian Electric Co., said the problem began shortly after 11 p.m.

"Crews are out there trying to fix the problem," she said, but they did not yet know the cause of the outage.

104 HAWAIIAN FAMILIES GET LOTS

House lots and homes in Lahaina were awarded yesterday to 104 Hawaiian families by the state Department of Hawaiian Home Lands and Dowling Co.

The lots are part of the first phase of the Villages of Leiali'i, next to the Lahaina Civic Center. It is the first Home Lands development in West Maui, according to a department release.

The Dowling Co. will develop the subdivision as a turnkey project. Recipients yesterday chose from two-, three- and four-bedroom homes and six models. The average lot size is 6,500 square feet, and prices range from $145,000 to $250,000.

Construction will begin in February, and the first recipients are expected to move into the homes in August.

POLICE PLANNING DUI CHECKPOINTS

Honolulu police will set up impaired-driver checkpoints at various spots on O'ahu during the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday weekend to deter people from driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

The checkpoints will operate at unannounced times and locations through Tuesday.

PLAN COMPLIANCE SUIT TO PROCEED

The state attorney general's office is going forward as planned with a lawsuit against Plan Compliance Group to regain as much as $2 million for Department of Education employees who invested in an annuity plan through the agency.

The group failed to make certain payments for about 10,000 DOE employees last September, amounting to about $2 million, and the attorney general is suing to regain the money.

PCG has filed for bankruptcy protection, but Dana Viola, special assistant to the attorney general and his public information officer, said "the state is not going to back off on the complaint because of the filing."

MAN, 54, ARRESTED ON SEX CHARGES

A North Shore man was arrested Thursday on suspicion of sexually assaulting a family member 13 times over a 30-month period.

The woman who filed the complaint is now 20 years old. She told police the assaults began when she was 15 and resulted in her bearing a child.

Police met with a 54-year-old Pupukea man Thursday and arrested him on suspicion of six counts of first-degree sexual assault and seven counts of second-degree sexual assault.

SUSPECT ARRESTED IN ASSAULT, THREAT

A 29-year-old Kaimuki man was arrested Thursday night on suspicion of assaulting his 41-year-old girlfriend earlier in the day and threatening her with a gun a week ago.

Police responded about 7:20 p.m. to a complaint about a loud argument at the couple's home on Wai'alae Avenue. The woman told police her boyfriend had assaulted her and that he had pointed a gun at her on Jan. 6 and threatened her.

'EWA MANSION HEALTH FAIR SITE

A health fair will be held tomorrow at the 'Ewa Historic Mansion, 91-235 Renton Road.

Nurses, doctors and social workers will be on hand for consultations. There also will be free blood pressure and sugar level testing, as well as free living will help, Keiki IDs, food booths and a fire truck exhibit.

The event is sponsored by the Filipino Nurses Association of Hawaii and state Rep. Rida Cabanilla, D-22nd (Waipahu, Honouliuli, 'Ewa).
