Softball Lum's slam lifts St. Francis past Iolani, 7-6

Advertiser Staff Writer

Shannon Lum hit a towering grand slam with two outs in the top of the seventh inning yesterday to lift the St. Francis School softball team to a dramatic 7-6 victory over host Iolani.

The Troubadours (9-1) remain tied for first place with Kamehameha (9-1) in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu. Iolani, which plays at Kamehameha on Saturday, dropped to 8-2.

Besides the championship, the three teams also are fighting for the ILH's two Division I state tournament berths. St. Francis, which won the Division II state title last season, declared itself a DI team last summer.

"This was a big win," said Lum, a junior who sat out last season after transferring from Castle. "We knew we could compete (in Division I); all we needed was the confidence and to work as a team."

The Troubadours have also shown an ability to come from behind to win, which they did yesterday for the third time this season. The Raiders had rallied from a 3-0 deficit and took a 4-3 lead in the fifth, then went up 6-3 in the sixth after an error and Chelsey Keola's run-scoring groundout.

St. Francis loaded the bases with no outs in the seventh, but Keola — Iolani's starting pitcher — got a force out at home and a strikeout before Lum came up.

She crushed the first pitch over the center-field fence, with Raiders center fielder Raechele Takara flipping over the mesh fence in pursuit.

"It was sweet," Lum said of the pitch. "I saw it and just went after it, and when I rounded first I saw it drop. It was so much relief."

Iolani coach Chris Shimabukuro said he was well aware of Lum's power.

"We actually were trying to pitch around her, because we knew she was the one girl on their team who could hit one like that," Shimabukuro said. "We just didn't execute the pitch."
