Davis Kane set a record in the 50-yard freestyle yesterday to help Kamehameha capture its first Local Motion/Hawai'i High School Athletic Association Boys Swimming and Diving Championshisp.
The meet was held at the Kamehameha-Hawai'i campus' Naeole Aquatics Facility in Kea'au.
"It feels good," said Kane, a senior whose time of 20.73 seconds broke the mark of 20.80 set by Punahou's Nick Borreca in 2001. "Everyone was putting their hearts into it and we all did the best we could. That's how we won."
Kamehameha scored 67 points, Punahou took second with 54 points and Iolani third with 45.
"Every event was key, and all of our boys swam well," Kamehameha coach Kenny Chew said. "I coached Nick Borreca, and I thought his record would stand for 10 or 12 years. But Davis really wanted it and that was his goal for the state meet. But it wasn't just him — it was a great team effort."
Kane said Borreca's record was something he had an eye on for a long time.
"I always knew about it and I was looking at it since my freshman year," Kane said. "Back then, I never thought I could beat it, but this year I came within two-tenths of a second, so I've been working toward it."
Freshman Christel Simms and junior Brittany Beauchan set records in the 200 free and 100 breast stroke, respectively, to lead Punahou to a dominant victory in the girls meet.
Simms set the 200 free record with 1:50.46, breaking the mark of 1:50.55 set by Punahou's Kathy Shipman in 1979.
St. Andrew's Priory senior Aleia Monden set a record in the 1-meter diving event, scoring 491.05 points for her fourth straight state championship. She set the previous mark of 475.20 last year.
Beauchan swam the 100 breast in 1 minute, 4.10 seconds to break the mark of 1:04.83 she set in Friday's trials. The previous record was set by Pearl City's Nadine Takai in 1988. Beauchan and Simms also were part of the Buffanblu's 200 free relay team that finished in a record time of 1:36.80, breaking the previous mark of 1:38.18 set by Punahou in 1999.
"I had a plan, I really wanted to go 1:03," Beauchan said of the 100 breast. "I didn't quite make that time, but I'm still happy because I was fatigued and had to fight through that. I was trying for that record ever since I was a freshman at Kalaheo, and I wanted it really bad this year."
Other members of Punahou's record-setting 200 free relay team were sophomores Kelli Moy and Michelle Yoshida.
The Buffanblu breezed to the title with 91 points, followed by Iolani (38) and Hawai'i Prep (28).
"Everybody remembers we lost to Iolani in the first meet this season," Beauchan said. "We wanted to prove we could do this, that we could win states."
