Kuehne, Burks earn SBS berths

Kelli Kuehne and Audra Burks, non-exempt players on the LPGA Tour, earned qualifying spots yesterday for this week's SBS Open at Turtle Bay.
Kuehne shot a 3-under-par 69, and Burks a 70, at Turtle Bay Resort's Palmer Course. Teresa Lu and Amy Read shot 72s in the qualifying round.
The SBS Open, the LPGA's 54-hole season opener, begins Thursday. Jennifer Rosales is the defending champion.
Hawai'i amateurs Stephanie Kono shot 73 and Christine Kim an 89.
HONORS
GROUP PLANS SCULPTURE TO HONOR THOMPSON
Kaho'omiki, Hawai'i's Council on Physical Activity, is raising money to honor Donnis Thompson, the first women's director of athletics at the University of Hawai'i.
The group hopes to raise at least $10,000 by March 1 to create a commemorative bronzed sculpture. It will need another $20,000 by mid-April to complete the project.
Thompson helped inspire the late Patsy Mink's authorship of Title IX legislation and was the first to work at implementing it at UH. The legislation, renamed the Patsy T. Mink Equal Opportunity in Education Act in 2002, was passed in 1972 and eventually expanded to help prohibit gender discrimination in any United States educational institution receiving federal funds.
Thompson also served as Hawai'i's first female superintendent of education.
The sculpture will feature Thompson holding copies of Title IX documents in one hand and a volleyball in the other. It is scheduled to be dedicated in May at UH and placed temporarily in the Stan Sheriff Center.

OFFENSIVE LINEMEN CAMP STARTS SUNDAY
Pros Olin Kreutz and Dominic Raiola have gone through it. Some 70 players went on to play in college with the help of it.
It's the ninth annual Brian Derby Offensive Linemen Camp, which is set to start Sunday. It is open to children 9 years old and up. They will go through drills that help in their blocking fundamentals.
The camp will be held weekly and is free. For locations, call Derby at 386-1981.

Rainbow Wahine finish fifth in S.C.
The University of Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine sailing team finished fifth at the Charleston Women's Spring Invitational at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, S.C., on Sunday.
Yale won the 15-team meet with 64 points, followed by Charleston (106) and Navy (106).
Hawai'i's A Division team of Tinja Anderson-Mitterling and Cassie Harris scored 67 points and the B team of Shandy Buckley and Crystal Bronte had 74 points for a 141 total.
SOFTBALL
VULCANS SWEEP TWO FROM MSU-BILLINGS
The University of Hawai'i-Hilo softball team swept a doubleheader from Montana State-Billings, 13-2 and 7-3, yesterday at Phoenix. UH-Hilo's Natalie Fujimoto hit a grand slam in the first game.
