UH-Hilo defeats HPU in basketball

Joe Travis scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to help Hawai'i-Hilo to a 85-78 Pacific West Conference basketball victory over Hawai'i Pacific at Afook-Chinen civic auditorium in Hilo.
UH-Hilo is 14-7 overall, 4-4 in the PacWest. HPU is 5-16 and 1-6.
Justin Griffin added 19 points for the Vulcans, who led 49-36 at halftime. Travis Sobers and Justin Dobson added 13 points.
Donnell Dobbins had a game-high 22 points for HPU.
BASEBALL
WICHITA ST. ROUTS HILO
Wichita State batted around, getting six runs and eight hits in the first inning en route to a 12-1 victory over Hawai'i-Hilo in a college baseball game yesterday at Simmons Field in Kailua, Kona.
The Shockers are 3-1. The Vulcans are 2-7.
Conor Gillaspie went 4 for 5, including a three singles, a triple, and four RBIs, to lead the Shockers' 24-hit offense.
The series ends with a noon game today at Simmons' Field.
HPU SPLITS TWO GAMES
Sophomore Pierce Manglallan pitched a three-hit shutout, leading Hawai'i Pacific to a 3-0 victory over North Georgia in the first game of a doubleheader at Hans L'Orange Park yesterday.
North Georgia (4-4) won the second game, 7-1. HPU is 6-6.
Manglallan didn't allow a hit until the fourth inning, struck out two and walked none to earn his first win of the year. HPU scored its three runs in the second inning.
SAILING
UH WOMEN IN FIFTH
The fourth-ranked University of Hawai'i women's sailing team is fifth after the first day of the Charleston Women's Spring Invitational at Patriots Point in Mt. Pleasant, S.C.
Yale leads with a meet-low 46 points. UH had 67 in the 15-team field.
Tinja Anderson-Mitterling and Cassie Harris represented UH in the A division and totaled 38 points. Shandy Buckley and Crystal Bronte scored 29 points in the B division.
The meet ends today.
WATER POLO
RAINBOWS SWEPT
Top-ranked UCLA overwhelmed No. 4 Hawai'i, 10-3, in the first day of the Stanford Invitational at Stanford, Calif., yesterday.
No. 16 Arizona State scored three goals each in the third and fourth quarter to defeat Hawai'i, 8-5, earlier in the day. Iefke Van Belkum led UH with two goals. UH is 1-3.
SOFTBALL
HPU SWEEPS BYUH
Hawai'i Pacific got one-hit pitching in both games of a non-conference doubleheader sweep of Brigham Young-Hawai'i yesterday at BYUH field. Both games were shortened by the eight-run rule.
HPU's Dayna Berry struck out four in six innings in a 9-1 victory in the first game. Nicole Kalakau and Jennifer Baron each hit homers.
Courtney Kessell struck out six in five innings in the 13-0 victory in the second game. Kalakau also homered in the second game.
HILO LOSES TWO ON ROAD
Hawai'i-Hilo opened its season with a doubleheader loss at Phoenix yesterday.
Grand Canyon (4-6) defeated the Vulcans, 2-1, in the first game and Cal State Dominguez Hills (4-0) beat UH-Hilo, 2-0, in the second game.
