Menlo edges HPU men, 53-51

Cody Christensen and Bryon Wesley each scored 12 points and Israel Torres added 11 to help Menlo College hold off Hawai'i Pacific, 53-51, in a men's basketball game last night at Atherton, Calif.

Menlo is 3-4. HPU is 3-3.

Israel Torres hit the first of two free throws to give the Oaks a 52-49 lead with 1:18 remaining. Brandon Lee's field goal with 1:02 to go closed it to 52-51.

Lee then fouled Brandon Rogers, who made the first of two free throw attempts with 50 seconds remaining.

Mickey Wheeler led HPU with 10 points. Lee had nine rebounds.

Menlo took a 27-21 halftime lead and led the entire second half.

UH-HILO LOSES ON ROAD

Shamont Brown scored 18 points to lead Cal State Dominguez Hills to a 83-51 victory over Hawai'i-Hilo in a men's basketball game yesterday at Carson, Calif.

Cal State Dominguez Hills is 2-3. UH-Hilo is 2-7.

The Toros raced out to a 36-16 halftime lead. The Vulcans hit just 5 of 24 field goal attempts.

Rashad Bilal led the Vulcans with 13 points and Sam Wilhoite added 11.

Yates to speak at UH-Hilo dinner: Former Hawai'i-Hilo standout and Atlanta Braves pitcher Tyler Yates will be the guest speaker at the annual Vulcan Baseball Dinner/Auction Jan. 15 at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel. Boxing card date change: Hawai'i Boxing has moved its Dec. 16 card to Jan. 13 at Palolo District Park. Amateur fighters are being accepted for the bouts. They must be registered with USA-Boxing.
