PUERTO RICO SWEEPS U.S. BOYS YOUTH TEAM
Puerto Rico swept the U.S. Boys National Team, 26-24, 25-21, 25-20, in the opening match of the NORCECA Boys Youth Continental Championship yesterday at Bayaguana, in the Dominican Republic.
Juniors Erik Shoji (Punahou) and Brad Lawson (Iolani) are on the U.S. team, led by Hawai'i men's associate coach Tino Reyes.
The tournament, for boys 19 and under, is a qualifier for next year's FIVB Men's Youth World Championships.
For pool play, the United States is in Group A along with the Dominican Republic, Guatemala and Puerto Rico. Group B includes Canada, Cuba and Mexico.
Earlier this month in Mexico, Cuba defeated the USA Men's Junior National Team, 25-16, 25-20, 25-18, to successfully defend its title at the NORCECA Men's U-21 Continental Tournament. Both teams had already qualified for the 2007 FIVB Junior World Championship.
Canada won the bronze over Puerto Rico, 25-15, 25-21, 22-25, 25-11, and also qualified.
The U.S. team was basically the same group that brought home the first gold medal for the USA at the Boys' Youth NORCECA qualifying tournament two summers ago. It includes Hawai'i's Kawika Shoji (Iolani graduate), Spencer McLachlin (Punahou) and Jordan Inafuku (Kamehameha).
Kailua's Taylor Donovan and Honolulu's Kenneth Rewick, both slated for 2009 high school graduation, trained at the USA Boys' Selection National Camp this summer.
