AARP Hawai'i clarified yesterday that C-SPAN will have the option to rebroadcast an Aug. 31 debate between U.S. Sen. Daniel Akaka and U.S. Rep. Ed Case, candidates in the Democratic primary for Senate.
PBS Hawai'i has the exclusive rights to televise the live debate between the candidates.
Barbara Kim Stanton, the state director of AARP Hawai'i, the debate's sponsor, said C-SPAN could televise the debate later if it chooses.
"AARP Hawai'i has not been approached by C-SPAN but if they are interested, they will be allowed to rebroadcast subject to terms for connection with PBS," she said.
Case had asked that C-SPAN be allowed to televise the debate. The cable public affairs channel routinely shows political debates during the campaign season.
Stanton also said that about a dozen people will be allowed to watch the debate live from the studio, including guests of Akaka and Case and AARP Hawai'i staff and volunteers.
