Watabu advances in U.S. Amateur

U.S. Amateur Public Links champion Casey Watabu of Kapa'a, Kaua'i, was one of 64 players to advance to match play today at the Men's U.S. Amateur Championship at Chaska, Minn.
Watabu shot a 2-over-par 73 at the Chaska Town Course yesterday for a total of 3-over 146.
Three other Hawai'i golfers who did not make the 147 score needed to advance were: Moanalua High School sophomore Tadd Fujikawa (70-149), University of Oregon senior and Iolani alum Matthew Ma of 'Aiea (80-161) and Punahou freshman Bradley Shigezawa (76-164).
Billy Horschel of Grant, Fla., won medalist honors at 78-138.
HAYASHI LEADS ALOHA PGA STROKE PLAY EVENT
Kevin Hayashi of Mauna Kea Resort fired a 7-under-par 65 for a three-stroke lead after two rounds of the Mauna Kea Resort Stroke Play Championship.
The 54-hole event at the Mauna Kea Golf Course on the Big Island has a $20,000 purse.
Hayashi has a 36-hole total of 8-under 136. First-round leader Kirk Nelson of Makena Golf Club is second at 73-139.
In the senior division, Rodney Acia of Hilo Muni shot a 2-over 74 and leads by eight strokes at 145. Kerry Greenwood of Leilehua Golf Course leads the super senior division at 90-173.

HEDLUND SELECTED AS CHAMINADE'S NEW AD
Kaia A. Hedlund has been selected as the new athletics director at Chaminade, the school announced this week.
Hedlund is the president of Kaico Sports and associate director for the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.
She was the assistant director of athletics for the University of Hawai'i at Manoa from 1990 to 2000, and is a former USC swimmer and head coach.
