MLS' Ching has knee surgery

Houston Dynamo leading scorer Brian Ching was recovering yesterday after having arthroscopic surgery on his right knee.
The 45-minute procedure was performed by the Major League Soccer team's doctor, David Lintner, and was to repair a lateral meniscal tear.
Team officials have been aware of the problem since Aug. 5. They said Ching injured the knee in the All-Star game. An MRI last week confirmed the injury, but Ching went on to play twice last week.
Ching, a Hale'iwa native and Kamehameha Schools graduate, has scored 10 goals. He is expected to miss about four weeks.

KOP QUALIFIES FOR U.S. MID-AMATEUR WITH 71
Brandan Kop shot a par 71 at Oahu Country Club Tuesday to earn the top Hawai'i sectional qualifying spot for the U.S. Mid-Amateur.
The U.S. Mid-Amateur is Sept. 9 to 14 at Forest Highlands Golf Club in Flagstaff, Ariz.
Gary Kong won a playoff with Doug Williams to earn the other spot. Kong and Williams each shot 72.

U.S. WOMEN, MEN FALL IN INTERNATIONAL EVENTS
The Dominican Republic rallied to beat the U.S. women's national team yesterday in the opening match of the $1 million FIVB World Grand Prix at Luczniczka Hall in Bydgoszcz, Poland. The scores were 21-25, 25-23, 19-25, 27-25, 15-8.
Tayyiba Haneef led the U.S. with 25 points, including 23 kills. Former Rainbow Wahine Therese Crawford (14 points) and Heather Bown (10) combined for 24 points. Punahou graduate Lindsey Berg set the U.S. in the absence of former Hawai'i All-American Robyn Ah Mow-Santos.
"This was the first match this season that we have played with new tactics and players," coach Lang Ping said. "We need more time to practice to play well."
The U.S. faces Poland today and Italy tomorrow.
The U.S. men's team damaged its hopes of advancing from pool play in the World League when it lost a second straight match to Poland, 25-22, 25-19, 25-23, Sunday in Poland.
The loss drops the U.S. men to 5-5. Serbia & Montenegro and Poland are 7-3, and Japan is 1-9.
U.S. coach Hugh McCutcheon started Kaiser High graduate Clay Stanley at opposite Sunday, but the change did not slow Poland. Team USA now travels to Serbia for its final two World League pool-play matches tomorrow and Saturday.
CORRECTION
The University of Hawai'i baseball team could face the loss of 1.17 scholarships after having NCAA Academic Progress Rate measurements below the minimum benchmark of 925. An article in Tuesday's paper listed the number at 1.7 scholarships.
