P.E. teachers will discuss the latest

A physical-education open house will be held at 7 this evening at McKinley High School's Hirata Hall, with nationally recognized P.E. teachers talking about the latest trends in instruction.

The event will feature: Gregg Agena, 2006 National Association for Sports and Physical Education Middle School Teacher of the Year; and Kay Bicoy, 2006 NASPE Southwest District High School Teacher of the Year. They will lead a team of P.E. teachers in presenting the information. The team will detail how P.E. is designed to teach students how to maintain lifelong healthful habits.



AARP WILL HONOR ITS VOLUNTEERS

AARP officials will honor the organization's partners and volunteers at an advocacy celebration set for 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Aug. 30 at the Grand Ballroom of the Pacific Beach Hotel, 2490 Kalakaua Ave.

The event, highlighting this year's AARP state and federal advocacy successes, will feature state- and national-level leaders, including national board member Mae Mendelson and AARP Hawai'i President Stuart Ho.

A two-hour training session for volunteer advocates will follow the celebration at 1 p.m.

For reservations, call the AARP O'ahu Information Center at 843-1906 and state whether you plan to attend the advocacy celebration, the volunteer training or both. Lunch will be provided. The events are free and open to the public.

AARP is a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that helps individuals 50 and older live independent lives.

DRIVER ARRESTED IN CAR-THEFT CASE

Police arrested a 25-year-old man Sunday morning after discovering the car he was driving had been reported stolen.

Patrol officers reported seeing the man speeding and making unsafe lane changes, and ordered the driver to pull over downtown.

The officers checked with dispatchers, found the car had been reported stolen and arrested the driver at about 7 a.m. on suspicion of unauthorized control of a vehicle.

SCHOOL SEEKING HI-5¢ RECYCLABLES

HI-5¢ recyclable cans and bottles will be collected at 'Aina Haina Elementary School, 801 W. Hind Drive, 7:15 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Aug. 23. Money raised by the recycling drive will be used by the school's parent-teacher organization to enrich education.

BAND TO PERFORM AT STATEHOOD FETE

The Kalani High School marching band will perform during the Hawai'i 47th Statehood Day Celebration, 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday at 'Iolani Palace. MARINE DEBRIS DISCUSSION SLATED

HILO — Terry Miura of the county Department of Parks & Recreation will discuss marine debris problems at a free program, 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Mokupapapa Discovery Center in the S. Hata Building in downtown Hilo.

Miura works at Richardson Ocean Park and is the local coordinator of the International Coastal Clean-up, also known as the "Get the Drift and Bag It" campaign, which annually removes tons of marine debris from Hawai'i beaches.
