Las Vegas rallies for 14-9 win over Kalani

Paul Sewald had five RBIs and David Fry drove in four runs as Las Vegas rallied to defeat Kalani, 14-9, yesterday in the American Legion (19-under) Western Regional at Albuquerque, N.M.
Jeff Malm pitched two-hit, shutout ball over the final three innings as Las Vegas improved to 2-0.
Ridge Carpenter had two hits and four RBIs for Kalani, which led 9-7 after six innings. Cameron Bayne batted 3 for 5, and Andrew Uehara went 2 for 4 for Kalani (1-1), which plays Arizona today in the eight-team double-elimination tournament.
Kalani scored six runs in the fifth to erase a 6-1 deficit, and added two in the sixth on Carpenter's two-RBI single to go ahead 9-7.
Sewald's two-run single spiced a four-run seventh that put Las Vegas ahead to stay at 11-9.

WAILEA TAKING ENTRIES FOR MEN'S CHALLENGERS
Wailea Tennis Club is accepting entries for two Wailea Men's Challenger pre-qualifying tournaments, scheduled Aug. 26 and 27, and Oct. 7 and 8.
The winner of each pre-qualifier will get a wildcard entry into the main draw of the USTA Wailea Men's Challenger, Nov. 27 to Dec. 3 at Wailea. The runner-up gets a wildcard entry into the qualifier for the Challenger.
Pre-qualifiers are for male singles players ranked 5.0 or higher. Participants must have a current USTA ID number. Entry fee of $75 per tournament includes free spectator admission to the Wailea Men's Challenger.
Deadline to enter the first pre-qualifier is Friday. Draw is limited to 32 competitors per tournament. For more information, call Wailea Tennis Club at 879-1958 on Maui.
This will be the first Challenger to be played at the Wailea Tennis Club. Participants in this USTA Pro Circuit event will play for a $50,000 purse and world ranking points.
UH'S AIKAWA HONORED AS SCHOLAR-ATHLETE
University of Hawai'i senior Kana Aikawa has been named to the Interscholastic Tennis Association's Scholar-Athlete team for the third consecutive year.
To make the list, a student-athlete must compile a grade point average of 3.50, earn a varsity letter, and be enrolled at the school for at least two semesters.
Aikawa, who has a 3.62 GPA in international business, is also an academic all-Western Athletic Conference team member as well as a UH scholar-athlete.

HILO SEEKS PLAYERS FOR MEN'S, WOMEN'S TEAMS
Full-time University of Hawai'i-Hilo students interested in trying out for the men's and women's soccer teams should attend a meeting Monday at 3 p.m. in the Athletic Complex Building 320C.
Workouts for both teams will be held Tuesday through Friday, starting at 7:30 a.m. on the Bayfront soccer field. The men's team will also work out at Waiakea Intermediate field from 2:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. with the women's team to follow from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
