Trout fishing season on Kaua'i begins soon

Anglers can expect fish of about a pound when the annual rainbow trout fishing season begins Saturday morning at Kaua'i's Pu'u Lua Reservoir, the state Department of Land and Natural Resources said.
The reservoir, which is in the Koke'e Public Fishing Area, is the only place in Hawai'i where people can fish for rainbow trout. The reservoir is stocked with about 7,000 rainbow trout, and 1,500 anglers are expected.
The largest trout caught last year during the season's opening weekend was more than 18 inches long and weighed nearly 4 pounds.
Although fishing will again be good in the reservoir, water levels are high this summer, so anglers may have reduced access to the fishing banks, DLNR said.
Anglers must have a valid Hawai'i freshwater game fishing license, which can be obtained at DLNR, at fishing supply stores, licensed agents, or purchased online at https://www .ehawaiigov.org/dlnr/fish/exe /fresh_main_page.cgi.
Fishing will be allowed daily from 5:30 a.m. to 6:45 p.m. through Aug. 20. After that, fishing will be allowed only on weekends and state holidays through Sept. 30.
There will be a daily limit of seven fish per licensed angler.
