Roosevelt runs past Kalaheo to clinch OIA Red East title

Two years after winning the inaugural Division II girls basketball state championship, Roosevelt now appears to be the team to beat in the entire O'ahu Interscholastic Association.

The visiting Rough Riders raced past Kalaheo, 59-45, last night to improve to 10-1 in league play and clinch the Red Conference Eastern Division title with one game remaining. The second-place Mustangs fell to 7-3.

It was Roosevelt's sixth straight victory since losing to Kalaheo at home, 45-40, on March 28.

"No one likes to lose, so we've been waiting for this day and we came to play," said Rough Riders senior forward Tati Beasley, who finished with 17 points, six rebounds and two steals. "We were hungry."

Like the meeting 3 1/2 weeks ago, last night's was tight until the final four minutes. But unlike the first time, when Kalaheo pulled away with a late 10-0 run, Roosevelt finished strong with a 13-4 spurt to deny any comeback bid.

After Shanadee Canon's three-point play cut the Rough Riders' lead to 46-41 with 3:43 remaining, Iwalani Rodrigues answered with a 3-pointer and the Mustangs never got closer than nine points in the final two minutes.

"The biggest difference between tonight and the last time we played them was tonight they dominated in the paint," Kalaheo coach Chico Furtado said. "Offensively and on the glass, they kicked our butts. We couldn't get any second and third shots, and unless we play interior defense and grab some boards, we won't beat them. They're solid — the better team won tonight."

In addition to Beasley, Roosevelt got strong inside play from senior Shannon Miyashiro and sophomore Rodrigues, each of whom scored 13 points. Rodrigues added 10 rebounds and one block.

Guard Dianna Zane contributed five points, four assists, a rebound and a steal, and guard Tiana Sugui came off the bench to score seven points and grab three rebounds. Reserve Noelle Kawelo came in and swished a big 3-pointer in the first half.

"We have a lot of weapons," Rough Riders coach Bobby Keanini said. "Against Kaiser, Tati only had two points, but it was OK because she knew they were overplaying her and it was opening things up for the other girls. Against McKinley, Iwa got taken out of the offense, but then Shannon went off and had a big night. Every night, it can be a different player."

Said Beasley: "Everybody contributes in some way, and we just play team ball."

Canon scored a game-high 18 points, grabbed four rebounds and made two steals despite fighting off cold symptoms. Mustangs forward Kendra Fischer, who averages over 14 points per game, was held to four points on one field goal.
